“That’s a really serious allegation,” the officer said. “And would you be willing to make an official statement? We will, of course, also do a drug test and take all measures to investigate.”

“Absolutely,” I told him. “The leftover cookies are on top of the fridge for evidence and I will do anything I have to do. I want to make sure she stays as far from Lucy as possible at this point, and if there is any way I can help prove to you these accusations are true, please let me know and I’ll be there.”

“Okay,” he said with a nod. “Thank you for your help.”

At that moment, the other officer walked into the house once again.

“We have her in the back of the cruiser. There is enough probable cause to take her down to the station and look into this further,” he said.

“Agreed,” the officer speaking with me said. “Alright. And you’ll be pressing charges on all of this?”

“Yes sir,” I said. “I would like to press charges on every front possible. Feel free to take photos if necessary.”

“We will be in touch,” he said. “Thank you for your cooperation.”

With that, he turned and walked out of my house, his companion in tow. I stood for a moment, looking around the kitchen at all of the broken dishes. She’d been grabbing them out of the cupboards and throwing them at me, and I was glad that all of the dishes that belonged to Lucy were plastic.

That meant her favorite dishes didn’t break, at least.

Not that I was happy about what had been broken, but those things were all replaceable. It would be a matter of just going to the store, and I could have an entire new set that very afternoon. The things that weren’t replaceable were upstairs. I hated that Cassie had walked into the fight the way she had, and I hated what she had said to me before she had taken Lucy upstairs.

Even if there hadn’t been anything I could do that could have prevented Lucy from being in the room during the start of the shouting match, she was still right. It wasn’t any place for Lucy, and I was ashamed that I had been the one who had allowed it to happen. But those were things that could be handled.

I just wanted to gather myself before I headed upstairs to see how the two of them were doing. I didn’t blame Cassie for being pissed at me. I hadn’t told her that my ex was the one who had come for the week, and I had no doubt she would be rather pissed off when she found out.

Even if she had been only the nanny, she and I both had feelings for each other. They were fresh feelings, and they were growing, but I knew she had deserved to know a little more of what had been going on than what I had shared, and now that she had seen for herself the way things turned out, I really owed her an apology.

I headed upstairs, not even bothering to clean up anything that was in the kitchen. The mess could wait. If Lucy asked about it, I would come up with something to tell her that would keep her in the dark about how bad the argument had gotten with Jordan. I felt she had seen enough of that dysfunction.

Cassie was in Lucy’s room, and when I opened the door, I found her with her hand on Lucy’s back. Lucy was asleep on her bed, Cassie humming a tune to her as she kept her comforting hand in place.

Cassie looked up when I opened the door, and she held her finger to her lips to stop me from saying anything. She quietly got up and walked over, slipping into the hall with me and closing it behind her.

“That was insane,” she said. “Is it over?”

“For now,” I said. “I’m pressing charges.”

“Good,” Cassie said with a shake of her head. “Poor Lucy.”

“Are you okay?” I asked, “Is she okay?”

“I think the question is, areyouokay?” Cassie replied. “We’re fine. She’s upset with what she saw, but she’s fine.”

“Thankfully she hasn’t seen much of that before,” I said with a sigh. “I’ve done a pretty good job of keeping that sort of thing out of her life. I just, I don’t know. There are times when I wish that Jordan could have her shit together enough to be in Lucy’s life, but then you see how that goes.”

“Crazy,” Cassie said.

“That’s one way to put it,” I replied. “But she’s been arrested, and I’m going to make sure she can’t come near Lucy – or you – again.”

“I don’t think she liked me very much,” Cassie said with a small chuckle.

“She doesn’t know how amazing you are,” I told her. “I wasn’t sure what her end game was when she said she was going to behanging out here for a week, but I’m really thinking now she was looking for a way to get to Lucy. It makes me sick, really.”

“It’s over,” Cassie said.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you more,” I said. “I feel like you should have known.”

“It’s fine,” she shrugged. “It’s over now like I said. Did you mean it?”
