“I promised you I’d be here.” He wasn’t that much of a heathen, was he? “It’s been a while, but this isn’t my first time inside a church, and I’ll take any reason to spend more time with you.”
“I’m just glad you’re here.”
She pulled him into the sanctuary, and they found seats behind Jessica, Chad, Jacob, and Kristen. He said hi to them anddidn’t miss the surprised looks they gave him.Seriously, I’m not that bad of a person.
A giggle escaped from Leila as they sat down, and Adler shot her a look which caused her to smirk and wink. That was sexy. Adler had to force his attention to stay on the front of the church, to the hymns, the prayers, bible readings, and the message from the pastor. It was difficult. So many other things caught his attention. The church was a traditional church with cushioned pews and an altar up front, a lot like the church he grew up in. He’d stopped going when he went to college and didn’t really have a reason except that when you stayed out late Saturday nights partying, waking up early Sunday morning was just not a top priority.
When the service was over, Adler was surprised that he enjoyed it. The company might have been the reason. They walked hand in hand to the nursery, and Leila signed out Skylar while Adler waited in the hall.
He watched as people passed by, many acknowledging him with words of good morning or head nods, and after a bit of smiling awkwardly to total strangers Leila came out with Skylar in her arms. She was the most adorable baby with her dark, soft curls around her face, and her light hazel eyes, exactly like her momma’s.
He stepped next to Leila as she walked down the hall. “Hey, little beauty.”
Skylar let out a squeal of joy.
“That’s such a high note she can reach.” He shook his head.
Leila laughed, her face lighting up. “Yeah, well, she only greets you that way.”
He pursed his lips and reached for Skylar’s finger, but instead of getting her finger, she leaned toward him, shaking her arms.
Leila stopped in the hallway. “I think she wants you to hold her.”
Adler lifted Skylar from Leila’s arms and placed her at his side before he walked outside. The rain had stopped, and the sun was out, causing the summer day to be hotter than usual and thick with humidity. “Come on, let’s get you in an air-conditioned car quick. It’shotout here.” Adler shook his head when he said hot, causing a belly laugh from Skylar. “Her laugh is adorable.” He smiled wide and said “hot” again the same way. She gave another belly laugh.
“It’s so funny what makes her laugh. I really don’t understand it.” Leila unlocked her car, and Adler opened the door.
He waited until she got Skylar strapped in the back seat, then twirled her toward him before she could get in the car. “I was thinking.” He brushed her hair from her face and stared at her. His gut clenched as she stared at him. It amazed him how she made him feel. Like there was no one else in the world but her. “Why don’t we skip the Pizza Place today and grab a bite to eat and go back to your house. Enjoy the day together. You, me, and Skylar. Do you want pizza or sandwiches?”
“Sandwiches would be great. That Italian you bought last time was mouthwatering.”
He swallowed hard to keep his body under control. “I know something else that’s mouthwatering.” His gaze held hers, and their connection was hotter than ever. He leaned toward her, and his lips were almost on hers when Skylar let out a bloodcurdling scream.
He jumped back as his heart leaped in his chest. “Shit.”
Leila laughed. “You’ll get used to her need for attention.” She climbed in her car.
When Leila got home, she laid Skylar on the floor to play and cleaned up the kitchen. For a place that held just two people and one didn’t do anything yet, things grew messy rather quickly. She had made her bed, picked up clothes, swept the floor, and just finished cleaning the kitchen when there was a knock at her door. She opened it, and there was Adler leaned against the doorjamb. He pocketed his phone and gave her a sexy-as-hell grin. He had his tie off and his top button unbuttoned. He looked relaxed and damn sexy. Her heart swooned. “Hey.”
“Hey, back,” he answered as he stepped in, wrapped his arms around her, and covered her mouth with his.
The kiss was sweet and deep. It took her breath away and left her weak in the knees.
“I’ve wanted to do that since I first saw you this morning.” He brushed his thumb along her jawline.
There was a woosh deep in her stomach. “Well, it was worth the wait.”
“You’re worth the wait.”
She could feel herself start to blush, so she pulled him in and closed the door.
“There she is.” Adler set the bags on the counter and went to Skylar and swooped her in his arms. She squealed with excitement.
They spent time on the floor playing with Skylar. Leila rested her back against the couch and watched them interact. They were so comfortable around each other, and Skylar was enthralled with Adler.
The feeling’s mutual, baby girl.The lightness of Leila’s heart was hard to ignore. She would not have believed that of all the men to steal her heart it would have been this one.
He came out of left field and was determined to get her to see him differently, and as usual, Adler Warfield got his way. Shewas head over heels in . . . well it was something, but she was sure not going to put a name on it yet.
