“And it’s so heartwarming to see such a handsome man be so good with a baby,” Kaye, a fifty-something married woman said.
“Absolutely,” agreed Tonya, a short lady with long grayish-blond hair. “Not to mention he’s very easy on the eyes.”
“Totally agree,” replied Ruth, a schoolteacher at the local high school as she lifted her wine glass.
Tonya, Kaye, and Diane lifted theirs.
"Book Club!" Ruth exclaimed.
"Woo!" Replied the others. They all took sips of their wine.
Leila’s eyes became wide as saucers. Which caused guffaws around the room.
Oh, my God.Leila looked at the bar table over in the corner. Yep. There were three empty wine bottles there, and one was half empty on the end table by Diane. “I am so sorry,” she said to Adler with her hand on her forehead.
He chuckled. “You have nothing to be sorry for. These women are a blast.” He leaned over and planted a kiss on her lips. It was soft and deep and lingered.
“Don’t mind us, you two. We were young once also,” Tonya remarked.
“We’re not old, Tonya.” Kaye replied as she filled their wine glasses and held up another empty wine bottle.
“Pushing sixty isn’t young,” added Diane sipping her newly refilled glass.
“It doesn’t matter.” Tonya waved her hand through the air. “Age is just a number, and the ability to have fun with a hot man knows no age.” Tonya winked at Adler.
"True that." Replied Ruth as she clicked her glass against Tonya's.
Leila broke away and shook her head as a blush rose on her cheeks. “What do you say we go downstairs?” She pursed her lips.
“Sounds good to me.” Adler rose to his feet and helped her up. “Ladies, it was wonderful meeting all of you.”
“Yeah, we’re heading to my apartment.” She gave Skylar to Diane to say goodnight and rushed quickly out of the room, trying not to hear the comments coming from the book club members.
Adler chuckled as they walked downstairs. “Those are some fun ladies.”
“Yeah, they’re great.” Leila turned on lights as she got into the living area. “Just a little crazy sometimes.” Suddenly she was pulled against Adler. “What?” she asked as she faced him.
“I just want to see my girls.”
Her free hand traveled over his chest. Her mouth watered at the memory of kissing that chest. Her eyes traveled up and her heart skipped. His hair was its typical organized mess, and his shirt was perfectly tight in all the right places. She stepped back to continue her perusal of his body. His jeans formed against his thigh muscles, and his smile was wide. He was a perfect specimen of a man. Tall, dark, and extremely handsome. And surprisingly sweet.
“Hey, you done looking?” He brushed her hair lightly from her face, and his hand stopped behind her neck. The warmth of his skin seeped into her body, and a bolt of electricity shot through her.
“For now.” Her gaze met his for a beat before his lips covered hers in a soft kiss that caused her surroundings to disappear. He was warm and smelled so good.
Skylar started babbling and patted Leila’s cheek. She pulled away from Adler as a grin grew on her face. “I think someone needs attention.”
“Yeah, and she’s not used to seeing her mom kissing her boyfriend.”
Leila pulled in a breath. Her boyfriend? Is that what he thought? Her heart pounded in her chest. He thought that much of her to call himself that? She remembered how he’d called them an “us” Sunday night, and the corner of her mouth creeped up. “You’re my boyfriend?” She could get used to that.
His brown eyes pulled her in.
“I sure hope so.” His gaze was smoldering. “I’ve thought of you constantly since Sunday, and there’s nothing I want more than you and me together.” His thumb traced her jaw line.
Her heart skipped. “It’s only been a couple of days.” She tried to play it off like she wasn’t concerned, like their time apart wasn’t a big deal. But in reality, it scared her how much she thought of him and how much she missed seeing him also.
“Really? You didn’t miss me?” His hands cupped her face, and his lips claimed hers in a heart-stopping kiss which made her knees weak.
