“We love you too,” Rae says with a smile as she squats next to the couch and rubs Emmie’s back.

I’m at the other end of the couch, and don’t want to say this out loud, so I grab my phone and text Mackenzie instead.

Me: It’s okay if you still love Hyla, too.

She pulls out her phone and looks at it, then her eyes dart to me. After a moment, she nods, but the look in her eyes tells me she’s not sure about that.

“Are you sure you’ve got everything?” Amelia calls as I walk out of the nursery.

“Yes,” I say, setting the diaper bag down as I come to stand next to her.

She’s checking things off on a list while bouncing Emmie in her arms. She stops and turns to me. “You’ve got—”

“The cooler with plenty of your precious milk for her, a fully stocked diaper bag, outfit changes for all three of us, and if you’ll hand her over, I’ll have everything.”

She looks hesitantly from Emmie to me, then reluctantly hands her over.

“Are you worried about me taking care of her?”

Her eyes widen. “No. No. I’m just…” she plays with Emmie’s fleece-pajama-covered toes. “I hate leaving her. I know I’m going to have to get used to it eventually, but I hate it. It was hard enough leaving her for Dani’s bachelorette party. I’m going to spend most of the day without her.”

I wrap my free arm around Amelia and pull her close, kissing her temple. “We’re going to be fine. I’ll be a few minutes away if you need anything—even if it’s just to see your girl.”

She leans forward and kisses Emmie’s head. “I know. Thank you. I’m just nervous. And excited. My mind is racing trying to make sure I’m not missing anything.”

“Relax,” I say softly. “It’s going to be a beautiful wedding. Olivia, Rae, and Sarah will be there with you to help make it go smoothly. Besides, this is an Abbott family wedding. They know how to plan shit. Go enjoy your time with Dani and the girls.” I glance at Emmie, then cover her ear not resting on my shoulder. “I can’t wait to see you in a sexy dress and hold you in my arms on that dance floor.”

She lets out a soft sigh. “That does sound nice. Sexy. I can’t wait for my appointment,” she mumbles, pressing her lips into my neck.

I feel a sudden urge to cover Emmie’s eyes, too, but thankfully, she’s drifting off.

“Ames,” I groan. “I’m holding our daughter. Don’t give me a hard-on.”

She rips her lips off my neck and smiles at me innocently. Then she pops one last kiss on my neck. “Don’t worry. I’ll make it up to you later.”

She winks at me and steps back, and I take a cooling breath before uncovering Emmie’s ears.

Amelia won’t be cleared to have sex for another couple of weeks, but really that just means no insertion. Our oral sex life has been hot and heavy whenever we can spare a few minutes while Emmie is sleeping. It’s all fast and sloppy these days, but anything with her is so much better than nothing.

But now is not the time for that. Right now, I am holding my daughter.

Pushing all the dirty thoughts I have for—

Oh. That’s new.

Well, newish.

Something strange has happened since Emmie was born. I keep wanting to call Amelia my wife.

I don’t know why. Some sort of Freudian slip because that’s ultimately what I want or if I just consider her my wife.

Thankfully, I haven’t said it in front of her or anyone else by accident. Yet. It’s bound to happen eventually, and then I’ll be forced to confront why I’m calling her that. But I can’t do that right now. We’re settling into parenthood and finally have our relationship back on track and more solid than ever. Now’s not the time to drop marriage into it.
