“Whenever you’re ready to stop discussing beards, I have something important to talk about,” I say nonchalantly.

A hush falls over the room and they all turn to look at me. Aaron, Joel, Trevor, and Jesse stare at me, waiting for me to say more, but I don’t.

“Really?” Trev deadpans. “You’re just going to drop that and not tell us anything else?”

I grin like an asshole because I have to have some fun with this. Me getting serious has been a big deal because I wasn’t for so long. I fully believe this is exactly how my life was supposed to go because Amelia is the girl for me and no one else ever could’ve compared so it wouldn’t have been worth it.

“I need your help,” I say solemnly.

Aaron and Joel exchange a worried look. “You know we’re always here for you,” Aaron says all serious.

I nod slowly. “Good. Because we’ve got a proposal to plan.”

“Holy shit,” Trev says.

“Okay, everyone, stay calm,” Jesse says with a smirk.

“But how can we?” Aaron jokes. “It’s finally happening.”

“Yeah, this is not a drill,” Joel says. “The man who never had a serious relationship before this is settling down.”

“Are you done?” I ask.

They all look between themselves. “Yeah. Assuming you’re going to give us details,” Aaron says.

“Hell yes. Because I’m going to need help to pull off what I’m planning.”

“When did you decide this? We know you were thinking about it,” Trevor says.

“We did?” Jesse asks.

Trev waves a hand. “You were busy.”

“Doing what?”

“Getting married. Now shut up.”

Jesse rolls his eyes but gestures for me to continue.

“I had been thinking about it, and after the bouquet and garter catching at the wedding, I was thinking about it even more. Apparently, she was too, because last weekend when we were celebrating Valentine’s Day, she gave me a ring.”

“Wait,” Joel says, eyes wide. “She proposed to you?”

“Not exactly.” I explain that the ring was not for me to wear, and the significance of that. “She wants—and more importantly deserves—an epic proposal. I want to give her one, and I have a general idea that I’m struggling with how to execute because it’s big. I want everyone important in our lives there, so Amelia feels not just my love but theirs, too. And I have no idea how to surprise her with that.”

“When did you want to do this?” Joel asks.

“Soon ish? As soon as we can pull it off, I guess.”

Joel pulls out his phone and starts typing. “I have an idea, but give me a minute. I need to call in a favor.” He types a couple more times, then a minute later, his phone rings. “Hey, Rae Rae,” he answers. “You’re on speaker.”

“Oh my god,” Rae squeals. “Congratulations. I’m so excited for you! Now, how can I help?”

“Miles wants to do it up big with all our friends and family there. So I was thinking… how do you feel about sacrificing our birthdays for the greater good?”

“I love that idea!” Rae says. “I’m in.”

“Really? You guys would let me plan an entire fake birthday party just to propose to Amelia?”
