“What the hell? Amy!”

“Are you serious? You’re pregnant?”

“Yes. I need to check with the doctor, but I’m about seven weeks along.”

“Oh, my God! I can’t believe…” Amy stops suddenly. “Hang on a second. You broke up with Rick three months ago, didn’t you? How are you two months pregnant? Did you sleep with him since?”

I frown at that remark.

“No, of course not. And I hadn’t slept with Rick in nearly four months, so it’s definitely not his baby.”

“So who…” I hear the moment it dawns on her. “Wait a minute. You mean the ref you went off with that night? Mark Barnes? He’s the father?”

I take a deep breath.

“Yes, that’s right.”

“But…but…” Amy splutters. “But surely you can be wrong, right? You could be four months along, right? It could still be Rick’s baby?”

“No, it’s not.” I’m getting confused by Amy’s remarks. “I took a test right after I broke up with him, just to be sure. I wasn’t pregnant.”

I remember doing that, hoping that I didn’t have anything to tie me to Rick. The relief I felt when it came up negative was palpable, even now. If I was pregnant, I would have something tying me to him for good, and I wouldn’t be able to get him away from me. Even if I ended the pregnancy, Rick still wouldn’t leave me alone.

It was better that way.

“But tests can be unreliable, especially if it’s early!”

“Amy, what’s going on with you? Why are you behaving so oddly?”

“Am I?”

“Yes, you’re taking about Rick and how it might be his baby. It’s almost like you want…” The thought makes me uncomfortable, and I rub my stomach. “Amy, you’re making me nervous. What’s wrong with you?”

“It…it’s just…” Amy sighs heavily. “Okay, fine. But you’re not going to like it, I know it.”

I’m not liking this now. Amy is not normally so shaken, and this behaviour is weird. I can’t stop myself from pacing around.

“Talk to me, Amy. What’s going on?”

“It’s more about what I’ve done that what’s going on.”

“You’re not making any sense. What have you done?”

A pause. Then I hear Amy take a deep breath.

“I…Rick and I have been talking.”

Did I hear her correctly? She’s been talking to Rick? I look at the phone again, wondering if it’s morphed into something else. But it hasn’t; Amy is really telling me that she’s been conversing with Rick.

“You’re kidding, right? You’ve been talking to Rick? Why the fuck would you do that? You know I didn’t want anything to do with him!”

“I know, but we got talking once we got back to London. He pleaded with me to hear him out, and I did. I know it was a stupid thing to do,” she adds before I can snap at her, “but he seemed genuinely distressed. I thought if I heard him out then maybe I could properly tell him where to shove it.”

“And instead you were dragged into his lies,” I say bitterly.

“He was so upset about what happened. He knew he fucked up, and he feels like he wasn’t given a chance to admit his faults and get you back. I told him that he needs to give you time and then maybe you’ll hear him out when you’re ready.”

“Are you telling me you’ve been seeing him for nearly two months?” I demand.
