Page 2 of After the Final

I frown at her.

“Actually, I don’t. And the thought of having sex with anyone is not something I’m wanting to think about right now.”

“Even if it’s for a couple of hours and you can go back to your regular life?”

“Even then. Things can go wrong in a couple of hours, you know.”

Amy waves a hand at me.

“Oh, don’t be like that. You’ll see that there’s nothing wrong with a hookup or anonymous sex as long as you’re safe. It’s just a bit of time out of your diary.”

“You’re not convincing me, Amy.”

“Nor me.” Viv shakes her head. “The idea of having a quickie with someone I’m never going to see again doesn’t sit well with me.”

“Although you can see the appeal, I’m sure,” Amy points out. “You were commenting about how hot the ref was earlier.”

Viv shrugs.

“Sure, he’s pretty fit, but I’m not about to have sex with someone I don’t have a connection with.”

As they squabble between them, I find myself thinking about the referee for the final, the game we have literally just come from. Viv isn’t the only one who thought he was hot; I’m partially to redheads, and when they’re tall, muscular and athletic that’s even better. Even with the scruff on his jaw, he’s intimidating on the field as well as sexy. If he offered me sex, I wouldn’t say no.

But that will just stay as a fantasy. It’s not likely that I’m going to meet him, so there’s no point in desiring something that will never happen. But it’s nice to think about.

I’m sure he would be able to give me a good time.

“Emma!”

For a moment, I think I’m hearing things. The only people who know I’m in Paris are Amy and Viv, and neither of them said my name. Then I see Amy stiffen as she looks over my shoulder.

“Oh, fuck. You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“What?”

But I don’t need to turn around to look. I recognize the voice, and I know who’s coming towards us. Viv scowls.

“What the hell is he doing here? He doesn’t even like rugby.”

“I’m guessing he’s here because I am,” I say bitterly. “He knows that I had tickets to see the final.”

“So he came all this way to corner you? Charming.” Viv sits forward. “He’s almost here. Do you want us to run interference?”

I don’t know what to do. I ended things with Rick because he was not respectful of what I thought was a relationship and tried to control me. There is no chance of me getting back with him, and yet he seems to think that he can worm his way back into my life.

Not going to happen.

Before I can answer my friend, Rick is by our table, holding a beer of his own. He grins at me as he leans down and tries to kiss me. I pull my head away, and he pauses.

“What’s wrong?” he says over the loud chatter around us. “Are you not pleased that I got time off to come here?”

“I wish you hadn’t wasted your time.” I glare up at him. “I said I wanted you to leave me alone, Rick. What part of that didn’t you understand?”

“Can’t I come and spend time with my girl?”

“I’m not your girl!”

I can’t believe the nerve of the man. He seriously thinks that I’m going to treat him like we’re together after the way he treated me? Amy and Viv look just as annoyed as I feel.
