I feel like my headache is distorting everything. What the fuck did he just say?

“You think I’m going to let you raise my baby? I won’t let you. Neither will Mark.”

“Oh, it’s Mark, is it? I didn’t think you got the guy’s name.”

“You touch my baby, and it won’t be Mark you’ve got to worry about, Rick.” I need to get to my phone. “Now get out of here before I call the police.”

Rick chuckles.

“They’re not going to do anything. It’s just a little lovers’ spat.”

“We’re not lovers, and I don’t want to be your lover. Now fuck off!”

I wish he would leave. I feel like I’m going to scream.

Please, Mark, get here soon.

Mark

When Forrest and I get to Emma’s house, I immediately see the ex-boyfriend outside. He’s practically leaning up against the front door, looking ready to barge his way in. Is Emma still inside?

I can’t let him get in there. My hands fumble with the seatbelt as I try to undo it.

“Do you want me to hang back?” Forrest asks. “Or do you want me as backup?”

“More like a witness rather than backup.” I open the car door. “Just in case I need an alibi, if you get what I mean.”

Forrest nods grimly and gets out of the car, heading up the drive beside me. Then I hear something that makes me go cold.

“You’re not going to harm my baby,” I hear Emma shout. “I won’t let you do that.”

Rick simply shrugs. He hasn’t noticed us yet, his focus on the front door.

“Who said I was going to harm the baby? That baby is mine as far as I’m concerned.”

That stops me short. What is he talking about? Emma sounds equally confused.

“You think I’m going to let you raise my baby? I won’t let you. Neither will Mark.”

“Oh, it’s Mark, is it? I didn’t think you got the guy’s name.”

He thinks that he can raise my child? I can feel the rage building in me. Emma is carrying my baby. And as far as I’m concerned, she’s mine. I won’t let this piece of shit do anything to hurt her.

“You touch my baby, and it won’t be Mark you’ve got to worry about, Rick. Now get out of here before I call the police.”

Rick simply chuckles. He sounds like he’s enjoying her discomfort.

“They’re not going to do anything. It’s just a little lovers’ spat.”

“We’re not lovers, and I don’t want to be your lover. Now fuck off!”

I’ve heard enough. Growling, I storm over to the bastard. Rick turns, confusion passing across his face a moment before I grab him by the throat and slam him against the wall for the way he spoke to my woman.

Damn, I’ve never been that territorial over a woman before, and I never thought I’d actually behave like it, either.

I see Rick’s eyes widen, gargling as I squeeze his windpipe.

“You think you can take my baby away from me?” I snarl in his face. “You really believe that you’re going to have anything to do with Emma and our child? You must be insane if you believe I’m going to let that happen.”
