“So, I made a deal with Ender to save my sister. I’m sure she, Stefan, and my niece are one big happy family.” Bitterness laces her tone, but I can’t blame her.

If her sister and Stefan were here now, I’d burn them to a crisp. They don’t deserve Rose’s sacrifice, especially since the last thing she did in her mortal world was save her sister.

But if she hadn’t done that she would have never ended up here, wrapped up in my arms.

“You will never feel that pain or loss here, Rose. Never. It is the one promise I vow to keep for you.” No matter what it costs me, I’m not going back on my word.

There is fear in Rose’s eyes. My little dragon is overwhelmed, and I’m willing to let those words rest between us. She will believe them soon enough. “Thank you for telling me.” It means more to me than she knows.

“Yeah, well, someone should know.” She shrugs and makes me wonder what rampant rumors spread back in her town about their devastating breakup.

I hold Rose a little tighter, scared she would slip through my grasp at any moment. “We’re staying in bed all day.” I don’t care about my duties or figuring out how Rose can break the curse on another dragon again, I just want her.

A surprised giggle leaves her lips. “No, we aren’t. We have things to do.”

“Fuck those things.” I’m fully aware I sound like a child, but I also don’t care.

My tone amuses her because she giggles. It’s the cutest fucking thing I’ve heard all day. “We can’t. You heard your council. They want to see if I can awaken another dragon.”

“Absolutely not,” I growl. “You can rest. You don’t need to jump back into things now. We have a little time to spare.”

“I’m not certain we do. Besides, I’m also curious. Aren’t you? I mean, I could really help if I learn how I’m able to awaken them. It would help you against the Nephilim, wouldn’t it?”

“Yes,” I say begrudgingly. “But if this takes too much out of you, then jumping back into it so quickly might not be the best plan of action.”

“Maybe. But I still want to try. And I would prefer it if you were there when I do it.” Then my wife gets a wicked glimmer in her eyes, it’s there so suddenly, I’m not sure how it happens.

She moves and my eyes trail her every movement. She shifts her body until she’s stradling me. My cock presses against her spread thighs, begging to be seated deep inside her.

“Let’s make a deal,” the wanton woman atop me says.

“I’m listening.”

“Come with me to where the dragons sleep and let me try to awaken one. Once I have my answer, we can come back to our room and find”—she rolls her hips over mine and we groan in unison—“ways to congratulate me on my efforts.”

“Mmm, I suppose you’ve convinced me. How can I say no to an offer like that?”

“You can’t.” She grins and gets off of me before I can protest. “I’m going to bathe. Wait for me here.”

And I do.

Chapter 19

Rose

My body still tingles from Malix’s touch. Warmth and desire flood me, and I can’t deny it any longer. I want my husband.

Even more shocking news: he wants me.

I do my best to keep my lust under control as we reach the cellar underneath the castle. Malix’s body is tense as he follows closely behind, reminding me he isn’t a fan of this plan. I understand why he wants me to wait another day, but I have to know if I’m able to wake up another dragon like I did for Cyrus.

At some point, Malix sent word to the rest of the council members because they now slowly make their way into the cellar. I look back once, meeting the eye of Aeron. His smug face makes my stomach churn. Did he feel like he won? His outbursts during last night’s council meeting solidified my unease around him.

I want to yell that I’m not here because he demanded it. I’m here because I want answers and I want to help.

But it would be a moot point. Men like Aeron only care if they get their way and not the circumstances surrounding it.

Malix’s hand grazes my back and I look into those deep, green eyes of his. “Are you certain, little dragon?”
