“Good. My wife and I are not to be disturbed. You and Aracelia are in charge until tomorrow morning.”

Both women nod, taking Elain up to get her fed and clothed, as they try to explain what happened to her.

Then Malix is in front of me, kneeling down. He tilts my head to the side, gaining access to my cheek. It still stings, but it’s something I can easily ignore. “You're hurt,” he points out.

“I’m okay, really—what are you doing?” I squeak as he lifts me up into his arms, just as he did last night.

“Taking you to bed.”

I scoff. “Stubborn male. I’m okay. It was just a hit to the cheek. I swear, I’ll live.”

The look he flashes me is equal parts terrifying and incredibly alluring. My traitorous body snuggles closer to him.

“We are going back to our room. Don’t fucking argue, Rose.” I bite back my retort, but glare to convey my annoyance. “And I’m going to soothe your cheek and then I’m going to fuck your stubborn ass into our bed to show you my gratitude.”

Gratitude.

I think I’m going to like gratitude.

Chapter 20

Malix

Some would say I’m overreacting. After all, there’s only a faint red flush to my wife’s cheek. Elain’s hit was pure surface level and didn’t break her skin, but that doesn’t matter to me or my beast. My mate is hurt and all I can think about is taking away her pain.

I sit Rose down on our bed and reach in my bedside table for the healing lotion. “This is really unnecessary,” she says again as I unscrew the lid. “I don’t even feel it anymore.”

That is irrelevant when I can clearly see her reddened cheek. The lotion feels cool on my fingers, and I gingerly touch her cheek. Rose doesn’t flinch, so I know her cheek isn’t causing her pain, but I need to be certain. Since I’m the reason she got hurt in the first place.

Rose is only in this situation because my kingdom is crumbling. She has done more in a few days than I have achieved in a year, since the Nephilim attacks began. Seeing my wife crouch down next to Elain and her attempts to break the curse has me on edge.

Admittedly, I was nervous when nothing happened at first. I shamefully believed that she couldn’t do it again. Horrible thoughts of my dying kingdom played through my head, and it made me sick to think about losing my people and Rose.

But I shouldn’t have doubted her. She’s proved herself capable and in front of my entire council, nonetheless.

Ender was right.

Rose is mine. My mate. My queen.

“How does your cheek feel?” I ask, wiping my hands on my pants.

“It still feels fine. Just like it did before you rubbed the lotion on.” It’s not a thank you, but coming from her it may as well be.

I’ve always liked my women with a fiery edge to them anyway.

“What about your strength? Are you tired? Need food?” When did she last eat anyway? I’m not doing a good job of meeting my human mate’s needs. It’s been so long since I’ve had a human around, I tend to forget their needs differ from dragons. My mother required three small meals a day and lots of water, otherwise she grew lethargic and moody.

“Malix.” Rose laughs and cups my face between her hands. They’re so fucking soft. It makes me wonder if every part of her will be this soft. “I’m okay. A little tired, but fine. I promise. Besides, there’s something else I need.” Her features change from playful to something that has my cock aching with the need to be inside of her.

“You know, in my world, in order for a marriage to be complete, we have to consummate it,” Rose says, walking her fingers up my chest. She’s drinking me in and I’m keen on letting her.

The scent of her arousal fills the room and I clamp down my beast who’s ready to shred her dainty little dress and sheath himself deep inside her pussy.

Soon. But not until she was begging for it.

“Is that so?” My voice is little more than a purr. In truth, bondings aren’t fully complete until the mates join through passion. Once that happens, it will be impossible for me to deny Rose. I’m going to want her in my bed, screaming my name every morning and night.

Dragons go through a period of nesting. It usually lasts about a month, depending on the dragons, but in that time, the mates spend their entire time creating their love nest and fucking in it until they pass out in each other’s arms. They only leave their nests to eat and drink, but then it’s right back to their nests. Bothering a nesting couple could end in the intruder's death. It’s best to leave them alone if you don't want to be ripped limb from limb.
