“We will leave at first light.” I stand, ending the meeting. My gaze locks with Aracelia. “You’re in charge while I’m gone. Keep the castle closed. No one comes in or out until I get back.”

“Yes, My King,” she answers automatically.

I don’t miss the death glare Aeron shoots my way. As one of the senior members of my council, palace responsibilities fall to him while I’m gone. It’s an insult I didn’t choose him, and he knows it.

I can’t worry about that now because I have a date with my wife I can’t miss.

Rose awakened another dragon today and I’m glad to see she doesn’t look as fatigued as she did when awakening Cyrus and Elain. I wish I had been with her during it, out of my own selfish curiosity. My beast has other reasons he wanted to be there, and they all have to do with protecting our mate.

She’s with me now though. She’s safe.

“So, how long do you think you’ll be gone?” I hear the hesitation in her voice. I updated her on everything that happened at the council meeting today and I can see my wife struggling with the reality of me leaving.

I don’t want to leave her, especially after last night. I just want to fuck her into our bed every night and morning, but our enemies grow stronger. If I want more time with Rose, I first need to assure we have a future that spans past the month.

“A week at most. Vivia and I need to see the growing numbers of Nephilim for ourselves. We also need to speak with the other leaders of Mescos. They need to prepare for the worst.”

“Does that leave me in charge?” The horror on her face makes me smile. One day she won’t fear her title. She’ll thrive on it.

“Decisions will be passed to you for final approval. I left Aracelia in charge of the daily tasks while I’m away. She’s familiar enough with the procedures and a good leader. You can focus on?—”

“Awakening the dragons,” she finishes.

I was going to say her garden because I’m not thrilled with the idea of Rose awakening the dragons without me here. It’s not a control thing either. I don’t give a damn what she does, I just want her safe. I can see herself pushing herself to the brink of exhaustion for the dragons, all the while ignoring her own well-being.

“I'll be careful.” She smiles, reading me like an open book. “I want to help.”

“You already are.” I stop walking once we reach her garden. The revival process is slow, but she’s out here most days with Mina, attempting to resurrect life into the neglected garden. There are glimmers of life peeking through the dead foliage, so whatever she’s doing is working. I haven’t seen this area blossom to its full potential since my mother. I find I miss how it once was; a small piece of her.

“Enough doom and gloom. We came out here for one reason. Now let’s go, let me see him.” Her contagious smile affects me, and I return it.

She’s making me soft.

No, she’s making me stronger.

She’s making the whole damn kingdom stronger.

Show her. My dragon is impatient, wanting Rose to view all of us. She needs to accept every piece of me and that includes my beast.

I start to strip, feeling Rose’s eyes on me. I hear an appreciative hum and turn to see my wife blatantly checking out my ass. “See something you like, wife?”

Rose doesn’t even pretend to look chastised. She meets my heated glare with her own, smirking. “I do. Do you always get naked before you shift?”

“The majority of the time, no. I know a trick to make my clothes shift with me. But I like how you look at me when I’m naked.”

“Hmm. You are allowed to always shift in front of me.”

“I’m glad I have your permission.” If I don’t start to concentrate, I’m going to take my wife right here on the grassy floor. The excitement in her eyes is the only thing keeping me grounded. She may want me right now, but she wants to see my dragon more.

When I finish stripping, I hand my clothes over to Rose who drops her eyes to my not-so-subtle erection. A throaty laugh leaves my lips, getting her attention.

“Well, it’s just there. Of course I’m going to look at it,” she mumbles with the slightest hint of a blush to her cheeks.

“You are going to do more than look at it when I take you back to our bed.”

“Promises, promises,” she sings.

This is a promise I intend to keep.
