“Yes, I will marry you.” Layne cupped both of Shay’s cheeks in her hands. “I love you.”

Shay smiled and only then realized she’d started crying when Layne wiped tears off her cheeks.

“Come up here,” Layne requested.

Shay moved to sit next to her, sniffled, and pulled out the ring, setting the box aside. She slid the ring onto Layne’s finger, elated that she’d gotten the size right.

“I have yours at home, you know?”

“My what?” Shay asked.

“Your ring.”

“You bought me a ring?”

“I was going to ask you during the off-season. I was thinking about renting a cabin or something on the lake and doing it there, but this… This is so much better.” Layne leaned in and kissed her.

“You have my ring already? When did you get it?”

“My mom and I went shopping a few months ago. It’s at her place for safekeeping because you would’ve found it if I had it at ours.”

“Wait. Your mom knows you have a ring for me?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Oh, that little liar.” Shay laughed.

“What?”

“Nothing.” Her laugh softened as she pressed herself into Layne’s side and felt Layne’s arm wrap around her shoulders in that calming way Layne always did. “Promise me you’ll do that forever?”

“What?”

“Hold me like this,” Shay said.

“I promise,” Layne replied and kissed the top of her head again.
