“It just always feels kind of gross. I should’ve showered before I tried to sleep, but I was exhausted and thought I’d be able to nap.”

“Exhausted? From the game?” Shay asked, knowing the answer.

“Yeah, from… that.”

Shay looked down at the floor and said, “I should probably…”

“Oh, right.” Layne moved out of Shay’s way.

“Are you going to shower?”

“Yeah.” Layne nodded to her stuff.

“Can I ask about the robe? I’ve seen you in it before, but I’ve never asked.”

“What about it?” Layne asked, looking down at her blue fuzzy robe with yellow flowers on the pockets.

“It’s a choice.” Shay chuckled and slid her robe over her arms, deciding she’d have to toss it in the hamper when she got to her room, but standing there just in a towel in front of Layne wasn’t really an option.

“It was a gift. My mom gave it to me, like, ten years ago or something. It was big on me then and is small on me now since I hit my growth spurt around fourteen, but… I don’t know. I know it looks silly to other people, but it reminds me of her and home, so I still wear it.”

“You really don’t care what people think about you. I think that’s pretty cool.” Shay smiled at her. “Not that you’d care what I think, of course.”

Layne laughed and said, “Yeah… Anyway, I should…”

“Are you going to the film thing tonight? And the dinner?”

“Roy texted me. I said yes to the film thing, and then she tossed in the dinner, but I didn’t think I could get out of the dinner after going to the film thing, so I said yes to that, too.”

“You’d want to get out of it?”

“I feel like I could use a day to myself, but the team comes first, so… Film. Then, dinner.”

“Skip it,” Shay said, gathering her toiletries from her shower as Layne started her own ritual of hanging something on the bar to give herself some privacy.

“Skip what?”

“The dinner.”

“I said I’d go.”

“Go to watch the film. Then, do whatever. I’ll cover for you.”

“Why?” Layne asked.

Shay swallowed because she knew there was this thing between them now. They’d kissed. Shay had left. They hadn’t talked about it, and now, they were in a shower where one of them was wrapped in a towel and a half-thrown-on robe, and the other was in a fuzzy blue thing that made her look a little bit like an adorable Smurf with long brown hair and amazing dark-brown eyes.

“Because I don’t want you to do something you don’t want to do. We’re too close to the tournament. If you feel like you need rest, take it. We also have this thing called school, and I know that’s important to you. Tell everyone you need to study.”

“I do need to study.”

“Well, there you go, then.”

“Maybe. I’ll see how I feel then. Maybe I’ll be able to nap after I shower, and I’ll feel up to it. Either way, I’m still going to watch film.”

“I guess I’ll see you there, then.”

“Yeah, you will.”
