“You have a bandana?” Shay asked, picturing Layne rocking a red bandana and sitting on a motorcycle, for some reason, and she didn’t look bad in that picture at all.

“I have a pack of them. My mom bought me a pack of twelve a while ago. She said that I could wear them when I’m cleaning my room to keep my hair out of my face.” Layne shook her head. “Moms.”

“She sounds sweet. When I moved into my dorm, my parents dropped me off and asked if I was good once we’d unpacked the car.”

“My mom couldn’t get off work to drop me off. She lives paycheck to paycheck, so she needed the money. I told her I was fine on my own.”

“Were you?” Shay asked.

“Was I what?”

“Fine on your own?”

“I guess. I only had two bags of stuff, and that was mostly clothes. Luckily, my roommate had a fridge and microwave, but I got by.”

“Has your mom come to any games?”

“No, but I tell her not to worry about it,” Layne replied, standing up and opening her closet door. “She’d have to get here first and take time off work to see me sit on the bench, so it’s not worth it. She saw me a few times in high school, though, when she could get off work.”

Shay watched as Layne reached into a bag for something. Then, she pulled out not one but several bandanas.

“Here,” she said, tossing some of them onto the bed next to Shay. “Take a few.”

“What about you?”

“I have the rest of the pack. I’ve never actually worn one of these to clean anything in here.”

“But you lie and tell her that you do, right?”

“Yes.” Layne chuckled.

“Do you really expect me to wear one of these just to talk to you, Layne?” she asked and picked up red, blue, and green bandanas.

“You heard Coach, Shay. You probably shouldn’t even be in here. No offense, but why are you?”

“I don’t know. I guess I was thinking about before, how you said I’d never been in here and that you’d never been in my room. I saw your door was open. Why was your door open if you didn’t want anyone coming in?”

“I wanted to air the place out from any germs I might have brought back with me from the airport. I was going to do laundry, too, but that would mean going to the laundry room, and Coach told us to keep to ourselves. I checked it out, and the machines were all full anyway, so my bedding and clothes will have to wait, I guess.”

“Hey, are you really worried about this?” Shay asked.

“I’m not a hypochondriac or anything, but I told you: I don’t want to be the reason the team loses, either. Even if Coach didn’t want me to play in that first game, I’d still be around everyone. I don’t want to get anyone sick. That includes you, by the way.”

“I’m at least six feet away from you right now.” Shay looked at the green bandana and held it up. “My favorite color.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“What’s yours?” Shay asked as she unfolded and refolded the bandana.

“Blue,” Layne replied.

Shay then tossed the blue bandana back to her. Layne laughed and caught it.

“Look ridiculous with me,” Shay said.

Layne laughed again and folded and unfolded the bandana. They went about wrapping them around their faces and tying them off.
