“Who watches Jace?”

“My husband.”

The judge nodded and wrote some more things down. “How long have you been married?”

“Nine months.”

“Anything you want to share with me before I end my questions with you?” The judge looked up again, focused on her.

“I’m a good mom. Michael will not be a good father to him. Michael is not a good man.”

“Objection, your honor.” Michael’s lawyer stood up. “It’s not her place to question my client’s character.”

“Sustained, Ms. Warner. Keep it on facts about you and nothing else.”

“Don’t be fooled by my job, please. I’m a good mom. I provide for my kid. I love my kid. It’ll kill me if I lose him. It’ll not be good for him to go with his dad.”

“You may step down now, Ms. Warner.” The judge turned his chair to focus on Michael, whose heart skipped a beat when he realized it was now his turn. This was going to feel like getting interrogated by the cops, but he glanced over at Jace again and reminded himself this was all for his kid. No matter what.

He walked up to the witness stand and smoothed his hands down the sides of his pants. Taking a deep breath, he sat down and tried to push aside his bad memories from the place. This wasn’t a jury trial. He wasn’t going to prison. He just wanted it all to work out so badly.

“Good morning, Mr. Brennan.”

“Good morning, Your Honor.”

“I’ll be asking you the same line of questions as I just asked Ms. Warner. You are under oath, and I expect complete honesty from you.”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“What custody are you seeking today, Mr. Brennan?”

“Sole custody, sir.”

“What is your financial situation?”

“I work in a mechanic shop.”

“Your occupation?”

Michael glanced at Haize, who was smiling. He loved that woman and felt strong with her there. “Mechanic and janitor. I’m not certified to work on some of the newer vehicles, so I do other odds and ends around the place.”

“What is your relationship like with Ms. Warner?”

“The only reason we have a relationship is for Jace. If it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have any reason to talk to her and I try to stay away as much as I can unless it’s something involving our son, Your Honor.”

The judge wrote, just as he had with Marilyn. “Have you ever been arrested, Mr. Brennan?”

No hesitation. All honesty. The judge already knew. Everyone knew. “Yes, sir.”

“For what?”

“Drugs. Assault. Breaking and entering. Theft.”

“Have you done prison time?”

“Yes, Your Honor. I’m currently on parole doing a five-year sentence. I did four years before being granted parole. I have about six months left.”

“What were your charges?”
