Michael held her close, hand resting inside her thigh. They fell silent for a bit, and he thought about the past year and a half. Off parole. Father to Jace. Married to the love of his life. Clean and sober. Marilyn was in prison for a long time, so the constant threat of her taking Jace from him was gone. The cops had investigated her phone calls to Mitch and found out she was involved in selling the heroin to him.

“What are you thinking about?” Haize rolled on her side, resting her face against his chest.

“How everything has played out. How I’m terrified.”

She propped herself on her elbow, looking up at him. “Terrified?”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “Good things don’t happen to me. I’m a Brennan. Destined to be bad. Destined for misfortune.”

“It’s different now, Mikey. I get what you’re saying and I’m not telling you how you should feel, but I’m not going anywhere. By your side, no matter what.”

“It’s hard to get too excited, when all your life, someone pulls the rug out from under you and takes away everything making you happy. But I know. I need to change my mindset. You and Jace don’t deserve me thinking that way.”

“Habits are hard to break, Mikey. But you’ve done it. And you can do this, too. The baby doesn’t deserve it either.”

Michael closed his eyes and stretched out, feeling so relaxed he could fall asleep. And then he thought about her last comment. His eyes shot open, and he grabbed her hand. “Baby?”

She nodded and smiled. “Yep.”

“Baby?” He asked again, sitting up.

“I’m pregnant, Mikey.” She slid out of bed and went to the bathroom, coming back with a plastic stick, and holding it out to show him. “Two blue bars means pregnant.”

Michael took it from her and let out a laugh. “You’re sure?”

“I took like four. All came back almost immediately with the same result. I’m two weeks late and I can usually know the exact moment I’ll start. I’m pregnant, no doubt about it.”

He pulled her in, kissing her forehead, both her cheeks, her nose, and then her lips. “You’re gonna have my baby?”

“I am,” she said as tears fell down her face.

“Jace is gonna have a little brother or sister?”

“He is.” She laughed through the tears. “How are you feeling about this?”

He felt the warmth fall down his face and pulled her close, smoothing his hands down her hair. “I’m so excited, Haize. Best wedding present ever! Are you okay with this?”

“I am, Mikey. You’re making me a mommy. I can’t wait. And to be honest, I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner. We haven’t been very careful. But here we are. Married and pregnant, a little one on the way.”

Michael kissed her forehead. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, Haize. For the first time in my life, I am excited for the future. And I owe it to you. You saved me. In all my darkness, you are the sun to me.”
