This merits a more distinct pause from Leo as his fingers hover over the buttons of his shirt. His eyes drop from my face to my suddenly bare breasts, and a shiver runs down my spine at his heated gaze. My nipples pucker, growing hard in the sudden cold of his room.

No fire burns in the fireplace tonight. Not at the end of June.

Before my nerves fail me, I step out of my dress, wearing nothing but my high heels and a lacy white thong, as I slowly approach him. Trying my best at a seductive gaze, I peer up at Leo as I rest my palms on the firm muscle of his shirt-clad chest.

I can feel the powerful beat of his heart against my palm, fast enough to make me think I’m doing something that appeals to him. Then I lean in, tilting my chin up and tipping my head as I kiss him, slow and sweet.

Heat radiates through my body as he stands motionless for several seconds, our lips locked in a passionate kiss. But he doesn’t deepen it or take control like he did the first night he was with me.

Strong hands grip my upper arms, and a second later, Leo guides me firmly back a step, breaking the kiss as he removes me from his personal space. Then he turns to finish removing his shirt, his demeanor cold and distant.

“What, you don’t want to?” I ask, halfway between baffled and antagonizing. How am I supposed to make any headway with him if he doesn’t even want me? Was I wrong in thinking the attraction between us is mutual? “It’s our wedding night, Leo. People will expect us to make the most of it—especially since we’re delaying our honeymoon.”

I throw the last part in to try to drive the point home. I don’t actually believe Leo intends to take me on the honeymoon he casually promised once his responsibilities calm down. But it’s something I can use as leverage to make my argument more convincing.

Dropping his dress shirt casually onto the floor, Leo eyes me for a long moment, his handsome features working to find an expression they can settle into comfortably. Then they soften.

“You’re right. I’m sorry. It’s been a long day, but we should enjoy tonight. Right?”

A fire lights in his eyes, awakening unexpected excitement in my belly, and my breath catches as he closes the space between us once more. His arms wrap around me, pulling me close as the heat from his bare skin radiates into my exposed flesh.

Despite myself, I moan as his lips capture mine in a passionate kiss, his tongue stroking the seam between them, encouraging me to let him in. I do, my heart pounding a mile a minute as I try to make sense of how I managed to convince him so easily.

It shocks me—how readily I can forget how much I hate Leo when he holds me like this, kissing the sanity from my brain in an instant. His tongue strokes tantalizingly across my own, tangling with it in a seductive dance as his hands travel slowly down my back.

Tingling anticipation races up my spine as he reaches my butt, his fingers splaying as he grips the exposed flesh greedily. Then he bends to scoop me up, his hand gripping my thighs as he lifts me off the ground like I weigh little more than a feather.

I gasp, my arms shifting to wrap around his neck as he guides my leg around his hips, and my core tightens at the sudden and intense closeness of feeling his bare skin pressed against every inch of me.

His belt buckle digs adamantly into the tender flesh of my inner thigh, and I arch my back as the slight discomfort triggers my excitement.

“Fuck, you’re sexy,” he breathes, kissing my neck as my head tips back, my breasts pressing firmly against his hard pecs.

Then he turns, carrying me toward the bed.

But he doesn’t lay me down like he did last time. Instead, he carries me to the glass door of his balcony just to the side of his bedside table.

“What are you doing?” I gasp as the fresh summer night breeze whispers across my back, raising goosebumps in its wake. Fear tightens around my throat as I think of the house full of guests sleeping in the rooms all around us.

Anyone on the floor above us could easily look out their window and know exactly what we’re doing.

“Leo,” I whisper, desperation tinging my tone, “someone might see us.”

“Isn’t that what you wanted?” he taunts, his arms like iron around my waist as he carries me to the balcony railing.

Cold sandstone bites into the tender flesh as he sets me down on the coarse railing.

“I think we ought to make a show of it so no one will doubt that the baby I put in your belly is legitimate. Don’t you agree?” His tone is arctic, as cold as ice.

“Leo, please,” I beg, panic rising in my chest as I realize what his intentions are. “Someone will see.”

“Isn’t that the point?” he breathes, leaning close to press his lips to mine.

And despite myself, my stomach flutters, my desire awakening at his sensual kiss.

A moment later, his fingers hook around the skimpy lace of my panties, and with a forceful yank, he shreds the fabric as he tears it off me. I squeal at the sudden, intense sting, then press my lips fiercely to his to try and muffle the sound.

He chuckles, low and wicked, his bare chest vibrating against my breasts as he holds me close with one arm. I can feel him unbuckle his belt with the other, then undo the button and zipper of his slacks, and cold anxiety mingles with a molten heat deep in my belly.
