She started to lift the blindfold when he captured her hands, stilling them. “One more?” he asked roughly.

“This won’t make things weird?”

“If it’s weird then I’m doing something wrong,” he said.

She let out a small chuckle, but she still needed to clarify what was happening. “This is just for fun. It won’t change anything.”

“Just for fun,” he repeated. “Now, I need to hear you say it.”

“One more.”

She’d barely gotten the words out of her mouth when his hands came around her hips, possessive but gentle, and his lips took her in a kiss that was nowhere near chaste. It wasn’t aggressive or over the top. It had just the right amount of pressure, the right amount of nibbling, and the right amount of heat. Languorous was the word that came to mind.

He pulled back and took the blindfold off. He squinted against the bright lights of the bar and blinked a few times before his gaze landed on Milly. And if she had to use another word it would be scorching.

He cupped her cheek and asked, “One more?”

“You’ve already had two,” she said.

“Third time’s the charm, angel.”

“Angel?”

He tugged on her sash. She looked down, having completely forgotten what she was wearing. “My sister made me wear it,” she said, and burst out laughing. How many times had Zoe forced her to dress up, go out for a night on the town? Nearly every time she came to New York for a visit. And this stupid sash was a total Zoe move. “She’s actually down there, sitting on the bar.” Lucas followed her gaze to the urn sparkling from the fairy lights wrapped around it. “Tonight is her Ghost-lorette. You know, kind of like a bachelorette party but with an urn. Zoe planned the whole thing, which is a total Zoe thing to do. She loved parties and people and all this kind of stuff. She’d made a whole party box and hid it in the attic, probably so my parents wouldn’t find it and start crying. Which is why I’m relieved that I offered to go through her things alone because if my parents—” She stopped herself.

Why was she talking about this? Because he looked as if he were about ready to say he was sorry and she didn’t want to be worried over tonight. She thought about Zoe and her dare: Do something for you and not what other people expect you to do.

What did Milly want? She wanted to have fun. With a sexy man. And not have to think about boxes or ashes or cancer. In fact, she didn’t want to think at all.

“You know what? I don’t want to talk about my family, I want you to kiss me.”

“As the lady wishes.” And then he did something that turned this from a fun dare into something heady, he kissed her like it was his vocation. They weren’t just kissing, they were having a silent conversation while exchanging breaths.

He didn’t take it too far, as if aware that two hundred sets of eyeballs were on them, but he still managed to blow her mind. When they came up for air, the entire bar was applauding and once again chanting his name.

But instead of enjoying the limelight, he waved off his friends, then took her hand and helped her onto the barstool next to his.

“What are you doing?”

“Well, I was kissing you, but if you have to ask then I guess I need a do-over.”

She bit back a smile. “No, I mean you obviously came here to be with your buddies. I wouldn’t want to intrude.”

“I’d rather be with you.” He looked down the bar to where her friends were once again sitting. “Unless you need to get back to your buddies.”

She looked at her “buddies” who were waving her on. Kat even mouthed, Touchdown! And put her hands in the air again. Gemma was clapping as if the proud mama. Milly groaned with embarrassment.

“I think I’ve been banished from the group.”

“Then let me buy you a drink,” he said.

A buzz of activity and conversation surrounded them, but the longer they looked at each other the stronger the bubble around them became until it felt as if they were the only two people in the room.

“Do you think they have hot cocoa?”
