“I figured,” Tyler said and I whirled back. He let go of me and leaned back, tucking his hands behind his head. “What? You think I got your name and that was it? I know who you are and I have a good idea of what Ryan White asked you to do. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to corroborate your story because the guy’s a ghost, always in the damn wind.” His eyes narrowed at me. “You know who the client was?”

“No,” I said.

“What were you asked to do, then?”

I heaved a sigh. “I was told to follow Mickey Weiss, hack into his computer and delete everything except what he had on you, Tyler.”

Tyler’s eyes narrowed. “Ty.”

“What?”

“Don’t call me that. It’s Ty.”

I swallowed and nodded. “Um, alright.”

“Good girl,” Ty said and sat back, falling quiet and lifting his gaze to the ceiling. Finally, he dropped his hands, rubbing his face. When he dropped his hands, he gazed at me – loosening his tie and studying me.

I flinched. “What now? I told you everything I know.”

Ty grinned and, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say he liked watching me a little afraid. Something swooped through my stomach and I blinked, pressing a hand there, wondering if I was losing my mind.

“I know,” Ty purred. “I believe you.”

“Thenwhat?” I demanded, my heart about to leap out of my chest.

“I’m trying to scare you, Lia,” Ty said and tilted his head to the side. A slow smirk spread over his face as he continued to stare at me. “Is it working?”

Instead of answering, I tried to make a break for it but my bare feet slipped on the soft rug. A big hand caught my upper arm and forced me around.

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Ty said.

“No,” I fibbed.

Ty’s eyes danced with amusement. “See, before you came in here, you didn’t seem to understand what you’d gotten yourself into.” His fingers drifted up, snagging in the loose material of my sweater. All of his attention seemed to focus on tugging it down and I shivered as cool air kissed the bare skin of my shoulder. “Now you do,sì?”

His eyes met mine and I wanted to shove him away, wanted to get his hands off of me. But at the same time, the burning fear brewing in my stomach had become molten; sizzling inside of me, and so when I shivered again, it was only half out of terror.

There was something else prowling, something I didn’t want to acknowledge but seemed to be taking over, wrapping slow tendrils of golden seduction around my sanity.

Time spun out as Ty stared me down. I tried to come up with something —

a plea or a promise — but in the end, all I could do was let out a whisper, “Are you going to kill me?”

CHAPTER ELEVEN

Lia

“If you piss me off, sure.”

My mouth went dry. I watched the lines of Ty’s face become harsh, as if he was staring straight through me – piercing me with his eyes. That careless, nonchalant nod at violence sent an icy spiral of dread deep into my brain. But then Ty blinked and the smolder came back, as did the sense that he was so fully present that it was a wonder I didn’t catch on fire from that look alone.

A gasp escaped me as his fingers traced over my shoulder and then his thumb rested against the base of my neck. I tried not to swallow as Ty turned to face me more; his big body leaning into me, his other hand crawling around my waist.

“In the meantime,” Ty said, as though I’d asked another question, “I have somethin’ else in mind for you, troublemaker.”

Heat pulsed between my legs and I tried not to squirm. Ty’s lips kicked to one side in a smirk and his grip shifted on my waist, slipping lower and then back up, till his fingers found the bare skin above the waistband of my jeans.

I swallowed hard as he settled his grip, curling two fingers into a belt loop and tugging me closer. At the same time, he glided his thumb up the line of my throat until he met my jaw and forced my face up.
