“I needed air,” I said. “And I’m fine.”

“I’ll be the judge of that,” he said, and I twitched in irritation.

“You need to let me go,” I said in a rush. “I'm not sure how long it's been but people are looking for me and—”

“Come here.” Ty’s words cut through the air, his tone soft but with purpose as sharp as a knife. I’d seen the flash in his eyes. It was a look that said he would be obeyed.

I folded my arms. “No.”

“Lia,” Ty said and I heard him struggling with amusement and annoyance. “You don’t want to fuck with me, not after the nightandthe morning I just had.”

“I want you to let me go,” I snapped. “This is bullshit. You can’t keep me here.”

He heaved out a long sigh. “Clearly yesterday’s lesson didn’t stick, hm, brat?”

“Don’t fucking call me that,” I flashed with more bravado than I felt and I stumbled back as he took a step forward.

“Lia, I won’t ask again,” Ty said. “Come here.Now.”

But I’d already turned and sprinted away.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Lia

Imade for the path on the other side of the area where Ty was standing. I’d gone less than three steps down it when pounding footsteps caught up with me and a hand twisted in the back of my sweater, yanking me back against the hard, furious wall that was his chest.

I heard Ty’s choked laughter and realized he wasn’t mad so much as he was fighting down laughing at me.

“What the fuck is your plan here, Lia?” Ty caught my forearm and spun me around. “Where were you gonna go?”

“Away from you,” I spat and tried not to notice how my belly flared with heat at his touch, how I wanted to both fight him and throw myself at him.

In the light of day, the twists and turns of desire were that much harder to ignore but the pattern they were laying out spoke of something too wicked for words. Part of me – a big part of me – enjoyed this strange game that we were playing, the push and the pull — especially the pull.

I wanted to play the bad girl with him almost as much as I wanted to be the woman that he whispered filthy things to as he made her submit to the lust and sin he wielded so easily.

I want you,I wanted to scream, my heart pounding through me,but I also want to hate you. I want to get as far away from you as possible, but I also want you to keep me here.

I should hate you, but I’m not sure I do.

“You don’t know what you’re doing, do you?” Ty guessed, and I stilled. He hadn’t meant it as a barb but it pierced the center of my chest anyway. To make matters worse, Ty tipped back his head and a rough, golden laugh slipped from his strong throat. “God, Lia. You’re fucking adorable.” He dragged me close and surveyed me briefly, his messy hair falling into his eyes as he gazed at me. “Let me guess. You’re being this way because you haven’t had, according to Miss Flora, any caffeine or a proper breakfast.”

“Tell me what happened to Mickey Weiss.”

Ty's fingers tightened and the laughter vanished from his face, something cold and calculating replacing it. He stared me downand I sensed I was tiptoeing up to a line that he didn't want me to cross.

Then he leaned in closer and I shivered.

Did he want me to cross it?

“You know,” I pressed, “the cop you shot in the stomach?”

Ty let go of me and stepped back. “Come inside.” I tried to move away and his arm snaked around my waist. He began walking forward, towing me along. “Lia, I don’t have a lot of patience to begin with but it’s thinner than usual since I got about three hours of sleep and had to leave the house at 4 a.m.—”

Ty broke off and seemed to shake himself as though surprised at that admission.

“You came home last night?” I asked, and he shot me an amused, superior look.
