Katya stands there - Enzo’s imposing frame stands beside her with his hand gripping her bicep to hold her into place.

The slimy grin on his face indicates that he’s already won.

Marci sits tied to the chair next to him with a gag in her mouth so that she couldn’t scream to warn Katya of the trap that she sowillingly allowed herself to walk into. His other hand has a very large gun pointing directly at my sister’s head.

I move to take a step toward him, but Dario - who I can now see beside me - clicks his tongue in a sound of warning that keeps me in place for the moment.

“Hello boys.” Enzo greets us. Just the victory in his voice is enough to make my lip curl into a sneer. “What a special treat to host you today.”

I hear the distinctive sounds of guns cocking directly behind my head and no doubt Dario’s as well.

“To think that in the end, it would be as simple as this” Enzo chuckles to himself. “I get rid of the rat in my clan, my greatest enemy, and the bitch that keeps slipping my grasp all at the exact same moment.”

Katya sneers at the insult. I can tell insults are just teeming to fall out of her lips. Thankfully she restrains herself with the gun pointed at her head.

“You have me, Enzo, you don’t need the girls.” I grit through clenched teeth.

“Oh, I know that.” He pushes the cold muzzle of his gun into Katya’s head and forces it into an unnatural side angle. “I’m going to kill them simply because I want to.” Enzo pauses like anidea just occurred to him. “Unless you think I should give her to my men as a war prize?”

The look of pure terror on Katya’s face makes me boil with rage. “Don’t you fucking dare.”

“I don’t take orders from you, boy. I’ve been doing this a hell of a lot longer than you and that’s why I was always destined to win this war. Now I have.” He shrugs. “Anyway. Any last words?”

“Yeah.” I grit with every bit of malice and rage that I possess. “Go to hell.”

“See you when I get there then, boy.” Enzo smirks - and the gunshot a second later might just be the loudest thing that I’ve ever heard in my life.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

LUCA

If there had been time, I would have stopped them from going in through the front door.

My father liked to say that there was a certain type of beauty in the simplicity of the overly obvious.

He said that people liked to try to figure out all of his possible plans so that they could try to circumvent him if possible. He applied the same sort of logic that people did when they lost something and somebody said ‘It’s in the last place you will look.’

It was almosttooobvious that going in through the front door was a trap. So, naturally, he was going to make that the trap.

I felt Alexei’s blind panic as if it were my own the moment that he saw Katya take off inside of the building. I knew that there was always that slight chance that my father would not wait for the bigger fish and might simply take his frustration out on Katya.

Because it wasn’t about her. Not really.

This was just bait to dangle to get here. Alexei’s family would always be his weakness. I do not doubt that if my father had been able to get anywhere near Nora, he would have done so. If Alexei hadn’t come today - she would have been his next target, until he had taken everything that he could from Alexei.

Dario would have been who my father targeted for me. We both know it. At least hewouldhave been. Dario knew the risk to his life the moment that he chose to go rogue with me. There was always the possibility that he could be taken and tortured for his loyalty to me.

But now? Enzo has to have had intel on where I’ve been. He knows who I’ve been spending time with.

This trap was for Alexei, of course. But, the added benefit of hurting me? Enzo never would have been able to resist it.

I have to hope that I can use that same logic to turn this situation into my own favor. I have to hope that I’m fast enough to outsmart him.

I’m only going to have one chance.

I say nothing to Alexei or Dario. I don’t even try to stop them from running directly after Katya into the mouth of the beast.

Instead, I run the opposite direction.
