Luca nearly chokes on his sip. “What? Want me to take care of him for her?”

I suppress a smile. “No. I’m sure Dario would be more than happy to do it should the situation call for it. But no, since it’s a boy he has decided that he wants to be back in the picture. Proposed to her actually.”

“Tell me she isn’t stupid enough to consider it.” Luca says.

My gaze flattens. “Don’t call her stupid.”

“That guy is scum. Lower than scum. After how he treated her the night we met? Absolutely not.”

“He is the father. He has legal rights.”

“Fuck that. Say the word and I will eliminate the problem. Dario is more than willing to step up. She will want fornothing. Not for her or the baby.” Luca says.

I catch myself before I answer him. I sit back in the cozy chair and cross my legs. “Why are we fighting over a situation that neither one of us has any control over whatsoever?”

Just then the first course comes out.

I don’t want to spend my evening arguing. Not on the first date that we are having in a month.

The appetizer course passes awkwardly between the two of us. Luca doesn’t say much. He’s not acting like himself at all. I don’t care for it.

As the first course comes out, he finally breaks the awkward silence.

“I’m sorry… I don’t want to fight. That’s the opposite of what I wanted to do here tonight.” Luca brushes his palms down the long length of his thighs. Maybe I’m wrong but it almost looks like he’s having trouble making eye contact with me.

“How did you want this night to go?”

He flicks his gaze at me. Something in his eyes darkens in a way that curls desire right through my core. I know that look. I know the things that that look leads to.

“Not just that, actually… I had a whole plan. We were supposed to have a nice evening catching up with one another.” He motions for the waiter to come closer. The man bends down and Luca whispers something in his ear before the waiter runs off quickly. He ducks into the kitchens and comes back with a stunning piece of strawberry cheesecake, my favorite. “Well, and then my plan was to tell you how much I appreciate you… how I can’t imagine living my life without you…”

The most stunning diamond ring I’ve ever seen in my life is nestled on top of it.

The sheer shock of the ring forces me to my feet and I stagger back a step.

Carefully, Luca pulls the ring from the dessert and cleans it off as he slides easily out of his chair and down onto one knee in front of me.

My breath catches in my chest. Everything around us freezes until we are the only two people in the entire universe. All that exists is this moment that we are sharing and nothing else.

My hands cup my face. My eyes brim with tears because this is the exact opposite of what I thought was going to happen and I’m so beyond happy. Blissfully, wildly, happy. Because it’s what feels right. Being with Luca is right.

“I was going to tell you, in every official capacity, that I love you.” Luca starts.

I’m sure that he has a lovely speech planned but my emotions get the better of me. I drop to my knees in front of him and fling my arms around his neck, nearly taking us both down in the process.

“Yes, yes, yes!” I exclaim happily into the side of his face before I pepper his face with kisses. I don’t even care that it’s going to leave lipstick marks on his skin. I can't seem to stop until he grasps my chin in his hand firmly and kisses me soundly.

If I hadn’t already been down here, my knees would have gone weak from the kiss.

It is a union bigger than just us – it is an alliance between two powerful Mob families joined in love.
