I don’t miss the way Enzo stiffens. I stay put on the bed. The Mincettis are one of the mafia families, but no one really knows who they are. Jason says something else to Enzo, but his voice is too low for me to discern what. A few seconds later, he steps back and Enzo shuts the door. He looks back at me, jaw tense and eyes brimming with barely controlled rage.

“Baby, I need to go,” he says, his voice surprisingly soft.

I arch an eyebrow. “What happened with the Mincettis? What relations do you have with them?”

His jaw ticks. “They made me a deal, asked me to partner up with their family instead of yours. I refused.”

“They asked you to marry one of their daughters instead,” I say in understanding.

“Something like that.”

“And now?”

“They want revenge, I guess. The details are murky; all I know is that they’ve stirred up some shit I need to fix.”

“Are you going to war?” I question, feeling my heart thud in my chest.

He shakes his head. “Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t. We don’t have the resources for that. And I never start a fight I can’t win.”

“Roman would help you,” I suggest.

“He would. But I’m not interested in a fight. I don’t think the Mincettis are either. They’ve done their worst, and I expect them to slink back into the shadows now.”

“So where are you going?”

He holds my gaze as he replies, “Russia.”

My heart rate quickens. The Bratva, which is the Russian mafia, and the Italian mafia don’t exactly get along. The closest they’ve come to it was when a Russian woman married an Italian Don, which led to the Mincettis. Still, Italians who bravely decide to go to Russia famously return without their heads.

“Don’t worry, principessa. I won’t die,” Enzo says with a soft smile. “It might take a while before I get back, though.”

He places a hand on my cheek and I lean into his touch. “How long?”

“I don’t know, weeks. It’s a volatile situation over there. But I need to regain control.”

“Okay. Do whatever you have to do,” I say, my mind trailing back to our argument.

He must see it on my face because he sighs, taking a seat in front of me. “Rosa, I don’t want the last thing we do before I leave to be arguing.”

“We technically didn’t argue. I made a suggestion and you shut me down without a good reason.”

“I’m sorry,” he says, his tone sincere. “I would do anything for you. Just not that.”

I sniff and look away, but not before I see shadows flicker in his eyes. “You have important things to do, Enzo,” I remind him.

“Baby…”

“I’ll be right here when you get back,” I say to appease him.

He places a hand under my jaw, lifting my head up so I’m looking into his eyes. “You’re mine,” he says fiercely.

“I know,” I say on a sigh.

When he captures my lips with his, I let him. I let myself feel everything, even the heartache. It’s too much. I always feel too much when it comes to him. I hate that thirty minutes ago, we were so happy, and now that’s all gone.

Enzo’s packed and ready to go in a matter of minutes. I get dressed as well and follow him downstairs. Something painful thuds in my chest when I watch him say goodbye to his cousins. Maria even gives him a hug. I can’t help but wonder if he wants kids. I’m on birth control, but it’s a pretty important conversation we probably should have had before he fucked me without a condom.

After saying his goodbyes to his cousins, he kisses me once more on my forehead, and then he’s gone. My heart feels empty almost immediately.
