The pain increased as the taste of magic tinged my tongue. I had never tasted magic like this before. I never knew that magic could have such a bitter taste. I felt my knees buckle under me. My weight was supported by powerful hands, which seemed to ignite a fiery sensation within me, gradually relieving the pain.

I forced my eyes open, gritting my teeth as the sun burned from the pain that still lingered. The man, who I had harbored numerous suspicions about, looked at me with eyes full of concern.

“Who are you?” I asked weakly.

“I’m your mate,” he sighed, pulling me against his chest. “My name is Xander.”

“Xander,” I sighed. The name felt like honey on my lips. The sweet taste mixed with the scent of that spiced coco I had come to enjoy so much.

The pain in my shoulder still throbbed, but I could feel it being drawn out of me as Xander held me tightly to his chest. He seemed to know exactly what I needed to ease the pain away.

“That makes sense,” I muttered to myself.

“What does?” Xander asked. His blue eyes were still pools of concern as he looked back at me.

“What?” I asked.

“You said that makes sense,” Brady answered, his voice pulling my gaze away from Xander’s.

“No, I didn’t,” I paused. “Did I?”

“Yes, you did.” Brady’s hand glowed, running over my shoulder where he could. Xander’s chest pressed into me protectively, as a small growl vibrated in his throat.

“Calm down, bro. I told you I would help her with the pain, remember? Besides, I’m her brother. I’m not about to hurt my own flesh and blood.”

I laughed, my head feeling light from the magic as it chased away the last of the pain. Healing magic always made me feel buzzed, but now I felt downright drunk.

“You two should just kiss and get it over with,” I laughed.

Both men jerked their heads down to look at me with deep frowns. “What did you just say?” Brady asked.

“The sexual tension is thick,” I chortled as I made kissing noises and pressed my fingers together.

Xander looked at Brady, confused, while my brother tilted his head to the side before crumbling into a fit of laughter.

“I think I overdosed her with the healing magic,” he laughed. “I forgot to consider the healing effects of a mate bond. That’s my bad.”

Xander gaped at my brother before looking back down at me. “How long is this going to last?”

Brady held up his hands, counting on his fingers, then shrugging. “Not sure. Probably should get her to my mom. She’ll know, or she’ll know someone who knows. Come on, do you need help carrying her?”

“I’m not fat,” I groaned out, the world spinning.

“No, I got her,” Xander replied with a smile. “She’s light as a feather.”

“No,” I whined. I could feel the world moving around us, raised up in Xander’s arms. “I’m not a feather.” My hand pressed to my forehead as I groaned. “The world is moving too fast.”

“It’s okay, babydoll,” Xander whispered. “We’re almost home. Just hang in there.”

A smile crept onto my face at the nickname. I usually hated anything other than my name, but hearing him call me Babydoll just shivers down my body.

“I like you,” I sighed, poking his chest before I nuzzled my face against his pecs with another whine. I’m not feeling well.

“Hey, you could have just accepted that he was your mate and not questioned the mark,” Brady said. I had nearly forgotten he was even there. “But you just had to be stubborn.”

“Don’t kick her while she’s down,” Xander defended me. I smiled against his chest.

“Yeah. Don’t kick me, Brady.” I could hear the slur in my words as I said it, my voice muffled by the hard chest I was nuzzled against.
