“Apparently, someone bragged about it at one of their restaurants. I guess now that the threat of retaliation is gone, the Russians don’t care much about loyalty—or discretion—anymore.”

“Does Gabriel know?”

“Do I know what?” The brother in question walked into my office, eyes glued to his phone. I’d bet my savings that he was talking to Vanna.

“About Gladius.”

He sat in the chair in front of my desk, holding out his hand. “Show me.”

As I went through the documents, I handed them to Gabriel. There wasn’t much there, only a list of names that might be tied to Gladius. The photos were of assassinations they’d most likely carried out.

I glanced up, wondering why Liam was so quiet. He was grinning at me, his smile so wide I had to blink. I was still getting used to seeing him smile at all. “What?”

“I have a plan.” Gabriel punched his leg, and Liam doubled over with a groan. “Fuck you. What did you do that for?”

“Just fucking tell us the plan without the theatrics.”

“Fine. We’ll work for them. Or pretend to.”

I threw the envelope down on the table. “We don’t know how to contact them.”

Gabriel grunted his assent. “If they were easy to find, we’d have already found them.”

Liam grinned. “We’ll put the word out that we’re interested.”

“We might be at the top of the food chain, but we’ve never heard their name before now. Which means they’re good. They know what they’re doing, and they must have resources at their disposal if they can stay invisible.”

Liam turned to me, a gleam in his eyes that told me I wouldn’t like what he said next. “The only reason we didn’t know about them is because we have you. We’ve never needed to use their services. And now we’re going to offer them you. Since we’re going mostly legit, we have the perfect explanation for why we’re suddenly interested in them.”

Nope, definitely not liking it.“You’re insane. I’m not going to work for the organization that tried to take out Dad.”

“This is the perfect solution. Once we’re in, we can find the assassin who took the job.”

As much as I didn’t like the suggestion, I figured it was the best one we had so far.

It was simply a business transaction. And if it led us to the person who shot Dad, it would be worth the sacrifice.

“Fine. But I get to make the plan. And you have to stick to whatever I come up with.”

Gabriel nodded. “Within reason. Because we’re doing this as safely as possible.”

I barked out a laugh. “We’re trying to infiltrate a secret organization we hardly know anything about. I’m sure I’ll be real safe pretending I want to work for them.”

Liam leaned back against the desk. “What Gabriel is saying is to not go in guns blazing. Play it smart. Find out more information first. Then take them out when we’re sure we can.”

I saluted him. “Yes, former boss. I promise to proceed with caution.”

Gabriel snorted. We all knew caution wasn’t a word I knew well. But we’d finally found another way to get closer to the shooter. And I’d do whatever I could to find him.

My phone vibratedon the nightstand, and I slapped at it with a groan, my eyes barely open. Once my hand closed around it, I fumbled for the Answer button. Hitting it on the third try, I collapsed back on the bed.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Fortuna.”
