But breakfast would prolong my return for at least a little while longer. Which was why I turned to him, bringing our faces only inches apart. “Petra’s?”

His eyes warmed, and a smile lit up his beautiful face. “I could go for some pancakes.”

Jude always got the pancake stack whenever we went to the diner. And the promise of Petra’s would even rouse Lenny, who was impossible to wake up in the mornings.

I suddenly became very aware of how close we were sitting. How his arm held me to him in a gentle embrace. How I couldn’t seem to move my hand away from his abs that were flexing beneath my touch. How all I wanted was to lean in and press my lips to his.

Before I could do more than take a breath, filled with Jude’s familiar and delicious scent, he’d made the decision for me, breaching the small distance between us and touching his mouth to mine.

The contact was light at first. But when I didn’t pull back, he deepened the kiss, pulling me closer. His free hand sank into my hair, tugging on the strands, holding me to him as if afraid I’d move away.

I couldn’t remember why I thought we should only be friends. Because this felt right. As if every piece was falling into place. As if I was right where I was meant to be.

And now that I’d had a taste, I didn’t want to go back. Couldn’t.

All the tension left my body, and I reveled in each move of his tongue, each low groan.

When we broke apart, it was reluctant, our breaths coming in short bursts.

He gently pressed his forehead to mine, our breaths intermingling. “I’ve wanted to do that since I first saw you.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re lucky I only slammed the door in your face the first time we met.”

He kissed my cheek, then the corner of my mouth before leaning back. “I admit that wasn’t my finest moment. But my brain stopped working when I saw you.”

If he kept talking like that, we wouldn’t make it off the roof. “You were pretty good at being my friend.”

Playing with the rings on the fingers of my right hand, he shrugged. “I thought you only wanted to be friends. If I’d known earlier that you wanted the goods, I’d have dragged you inside my bedroom weeks ago.”

Chuckling, I leaned away. “I can’t believe I’m attracted to someone so cocky.”

He pulled me back into him, nuzzling his face into my neck. “I can. I’m a sought-after bachelor. Women would kill to be in your position.”

Raising a brow at his statement, I patted his washboard abs. “Okay, Romeo, let’s not get carried away.” I stood up, grinning down at him. “I need food. I’m starving.”

He insisted on going down first and then helping me down. I’d been climbing up on the roof ever since moving in, and the drop to the balcony I used to get up there was small, but I wasn’t going to protest him touching me again.

Once we were back inside my apartment, Jude pressed a kiss to my lips. “I’m going to get changed. Be right back.”

It was then that I noticed his pajama pants and holey sweatshirt. I didn’t look much better, wearing leggings and a stretched-out cardigan.

I watched him walk out, the thin pants allowing for the perfect view of his ass. Pajama pants were even better than sweatpants. Especially when they were as threadbare as the ones he was currently wearing.

After taking a quick shower, I dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. My black leather jacket and black ankle boots completed my outfit. I even put on a little mascara and foundation, going through more effort than I had in months.

Once I was satisfied my hair was tamed into a braid down my back, I knocked on Lenny’s door.

“What?” came the muffled reply.

“I’m going to Petra’s for breakfast with Jude. You wanna come?”

Something tumbled to the ground, and then I heard footsteps before the door creaked open, revealing a bleary-eyed Lenny. “Can I have a chocolate milkshake?”

“Sure. Why not?”

I was in such a good mood, I’d have let him have pizza for breakfast if he wanted to.

He studied me like I’d grown a second head. “Really? You never let me have a milkshake for breakfast.”
