Page 14 of His For The Keeping

“You can’t wait?”

“I can’t.”

He shook his head at her. She didn’t care. He was holding something back. She wasn’t his girlfriend—hell, she wasn’t even his friend—so why should she be kind? She was done playing nice, even if she had willingly gone with him.

Then again, he said he would throw her over his shoulder if she hadn’t… Regardless, Frankie was tired of having no say in what was happening.

Shane pulled into the gas pump and turned toward her.

“Wait here while I pump, then I’ll go in with you.”

“I’m an adult, Shane. I think I can manage to pee on my own.”

“That’s not the point.”

“Oh? Then what is?”

“I swore to keep you safe.”

“What do you think I’ll do? Break an ankle going to the bathroom?”

“I need you to listen to me, Francesca. I will explain everything soon.”

“I amsoover you saying that.” She crossed her arms over her chest and stared him down. “How about this. You let me call my father, and he can protect me? After all, that’s his job. Or better yet, you can let me protect my own damn self.” She wanted answers and was willing to push his buttons until she got them.

“God damnit, Francesca!”

“If you think using my given name is going to change anything…”

“Stay your ass in the truck until I am done pumping the gas.” He slammed the door when he got out, then clicked the lock button on the keys.

She rolled her eyes.

She was a grown-ass woman. Locking her in the truck was hardly going to keep her in, especially with him pumping the gas on the driver’s side of the truck. Pulling the door handle, it unlocked, just as she predicted. Hopping down, she walked over to him and stood as tall as her five-foot-five frame would allow.

“Little girl,” he growled down at her. “I told you to stay in the truck.”

“And I told you, I have to pee.” She put her hands on her hips.

“I don’t play games,” Shane started.

“Nah, you said you don’t play games you can’t win, but I am the reining Monopoly champion in my family.”

Frankie found herself pinned between the gas line and Shane’s body. She would have to high step over the hose to get away. Her head spun at how quickly it had occurred.

“Now, listen here.” He backed her up until her back was flat against the truck, put his hands on either side of her head, and leaned in. She felt his breath on her face when he spoke again.

“While you are with me, I’m in charge. What I say goes. I don’t like being challenged.”

“Then I suggest we part ways.” She wouldn’t be intimidated by this man. Hell, her father was one of the most dangerous men in the country. Who was Shane to think he was something special?

“That’s not going to happen. I made a promise.”

“You keep saying that! What did you do, make it on your mother’s grave?” she spat out. How many times had she heard the phrase, ‘I swear on my mother’s grave?’ to validate the lies coming from someone’s mouth?

Shane flinched as if she had struck him, the anger crossing his features, scaring her.

“Why yes, it was something like that,” he stated coldly.
