“Are you sure you don’t want me to call 911?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.” Her stomach hurt where a ball of anxiety had formed in the pit.

Something wasn’t right. Her father wasalwaysreachable. With a business like his, he had to be. For her not to reach him, her mother, her sister, something had to be wrong. Very wrong.

She needed answers and had a feeling Shane was the only one who could give them to her.

CHAPTER 4

Shane

Shane walked up the concrete steps and rang the doorbell on the front of the house, then turned his back to the door. He watched the long driveway that led up to the house, scanning to make sure they hadn’t been followed.

“What are you doing ringing my doorbell? Get in here, brother!” Brad said, throwing the door open.

“There’s something else,” Shane nodded toward his truck, where Frankie sat, looking dejected.

“You brought a woman with you? Hell, yeah! It’s about time, brother. You know any friend of yours is a friend of mine.”

“I need to talk to you before I bring her in.”

“Fuck, I don’t like that tone. What’s going on?”

“I went home for my brother’s wedding.”

“No way, which one?”

“Shut up and listen for a second.”

“Sorry, go ahead.”

“Today was Patrick’s wedding brunch. I got there late.” Shane rubbed his face. “I got there too fucking late.”

“How many?”

“All of them.”

“All of…”

“My entire family and hers.” He nodded toward the truck. “She doesn’t know yet. Sister of the bride.”

“So, you need me to act like your entire world didn’t just end?”

“Yeah.”

“Roger.” They were both masters at pretending. It came with the job. “Have you eaten yet?”

“No, I picked her up and brought her straight here. Stopped only for gas.”

“Why don’t I go grab us some grub while you guys get settled in?”

“Works for me.”

“Help yourself to whatever you need. You know the house.”

Shane didn’t have to tell Brad not to say anything. That wasn’t necessary in this brotherhood. Approaching the truck, he readied himself for the battle he was sure would come. Opening the door, he reached out to help Frankie down, but she refused to take his hands or get out of the truck.

“Did you just tell him whatever it is you won’t tell me?”
