“We need to talk.”

“Talk?” She grins up at me. “I prefer actions rather than words.”

I hate to be responsible for tearing that smile from her face, but she deserves to hear the truth.

“Come. We can eat on the terrace. Despite what you believe, I intended to feed you tonight. The table is set overlooking the opera house.”

As I take her hand and lead her to the terrace, I grab two robes that I placed nearby earlier. As I help her on with one of them, I kiss her lips softly and whisper, “Only I get to see you naked, Serena. I am very possessive of my things.”

“Your things?” She raises her well-defined brow, “I am no man’sthing, Mr. Romanov, but I’m open to discussion on the subject and just so you know, I’m a mean negotiator.”

I smirk as we head out onto the terrace because I always get what I want and right now, I want Serena Vieri and I will agree to anything to make it happen.

CHAPTER29

SERENA

Iwas past the point of no return, and I couldn’t deny him if I tried.

From the second I walked into his apartment and saw him standing by the window, I knew what happened soon after was inevitable. I wanted it more than anything, which is why I was so brazen. It was as if I was a paid whore brought in to do a job and I loved the sense of freedom it gave me.

However, I’m kidding myself if I thought that was just sex. Not for me. It meant something. The way my heart raced, and my breathing intensified wasn’t because of a physical attraction. It was the man behind the wicked smile who is the object of my fascination and desire. The man I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since we met and shared an impossible adventure with.

We step out onto the terrace, and I gasp at the view. Sydney has never looked so beautiful to me and as I gaze down on the harbor and see the opera house illuminated against the skyline, I have never been happier.

I glance at Alexei with a delighted smile, and he returns it with a soft look of pleasure.

“Wow, you impress me every single fucking time, Alexei. This view is amazing.”

“It is.” He draws me close and stares into my eyes and whispers huskily. “You are the perfect view, Serena, one I’ve missed.”

“You hardly know me to miss me.” I say quickly, disguising the fact I am intoxicated by his words. Nobody misses me and nobody stares at me as if I’m the most important person in their world. I feel like that with him. It’s as if anything is possible and we could move mountains together.

He kisses me softly and this time more leisurely, as if we have all the time in the world and I wish that was the case. I don’t ever want this moment to end, but it inevitably does.

He pulls back and says with a wry smile. “Come. We should eat and I’ll tell you a story.”

Something in his expression tells me I may not like it and as he pours me a glass of red wine, I prepare myself for the dream to crash and burn.

I say nothing at all as he tells me what happened when they caught up with the flight attendant. Finding out I was the intended target isn’t a surprise, but it’s still a shock to hear.

“I’m sorry, Serena. At least we discovered it in time.” He says with a gentle smile.

“This time.” I reply with a shake of my head. “The threat is still hanging over me. Did she tell you who ordered it?”

This is the million-dollar question, and from the look in his eyes, I’m not going to like the answer.

“I’m sorry, Serena. She said it was your aunt, Giselle Matasso.”

It’s as if he has punched me hard and I am struggling to breathe. For a second I can only stare at him in shock, not really believing I heard him right.

“My aunt?” I say in a low whisper, and he nods, reaching out and grasping my hand in a show of sympathy that touches me.

“But why?” I am stunned, and he says with concern.

“I was hoping you could tell me that.”

“I can’t.”
