“It was enough.”

We step into the chauffeur driven limo and Melissa shivers.

“Those places remind me of when I was made to work a weekend job through college. Never take me there again.”

“It was a necessary evil.” I shrug, pulling out my phone and noting the twenty-five texts and several voicemail messages waiting.

“What are your plans now?” She says, gazing out of the window at the busy streets outside.

“Work, of course.”

“Of course.”

She shakes her head. “You really should try to have some fun occasionally, Troy. All work and no play make Troy exceedingly dull.”

“I play, Melissa. After I work.”

“A quick dinner followed by a fuck isn’t really what I had in mind. Really Troy, you’re missing out on living.”

“I’m breathing, aren’t I?”

She sighs with exasperation.

“I’ll never understand the men in this family.”

“You don’t need to understand us, sis. Just enjoy the lifestyle we provide.”

“You really are an ass, Troy. Talking of which, I said I’d meet Harrison later. He wants my opinion on a new house in Burr Ridge.”

“What is he, an old man now?” I sigh with irritation because Harrison Remington is even more of a player than I am.

“Who knows what runs through his head? I’m just the plus one in all your lives when you want a cover story.”

I lean back and think of the reason we went to the Brew House at all. I’ve had Laura Kincaid followed for months now. It was an interesting meeting with my private investigator, who discovered who she really is. He found out she was fresh out of university and seeking employment in the business sector with Hariges employment agency. It didn’t take much to fire my current assistant, who was worse than useless anyway, and arrange Laura Kincaid’s employment instead.

Yes. She will soon learn that I get what I want and right now I want her for a very important reason. To gain control of the empire her grandfather formed and remove her criminal family from the secret society he founded. The Dark Lords have become bigger than the Vieris and there is no room in it for anything other than reputable businessmen and men of power. She doesn’t know she has mafia blood running through her veins because she was adopted at birth. Until now, she was living a respectable life with good honest people who have kept her secret well.

She doesn’t know it yet, but Laura Kincaid is my key to the throne room and her grandfather will have no choice but to agree to my terms if he wants to keep his dirty little secret hidden, or face his past blowing up and devastating his perfect world.
