She sighs with exasperation.

“I’ll never understand the men in this family.”

“You don’t need to understand us, sis. Just enjoy the lifestyle we provide.”

“You really are an ass, Troy. Talking of which, I said I’d meet Harrison later. He wants my opinion on a new house in Burr Ridge.”

“What is he, an old man now?” I sigh with irritation because Harrison Remington is even more of a player than I am.

“Who knows what runs through his head? I’m just the plus one in all your lives when you want a cover story.”

I lean back and think of the reason we went to The Brew House at all. I’ve had Laura Kincaid followed for months now. It was an interesting meeting with my private investigator, who discovered who she really is. He found out she was fresh out of university and seeking employment in the business sector with Hariges employment agency. It didn’t take much to fire my current assistant, who was worse than useless anyway, and arrange Laura Kincaid’s employment instead.

Yes. She will soon learn that I get what I want and right now I want her for a very important reason. To gain control of the empire her grandfather formed and remove her criminal family from the secret society he founded. The Dark Lords have become bigger than the Vieris and there is no room in it for anything other than reputable businessmen and men of power. She doesn’t know she has mafia blood running through her veins because she was adopted at birth. Until now, she was living a respectable life with good, honest people who have kept her secret well.

She doesn’t know that she is my key to the throne room and her grandfather will have no choice but to agree to my terms if he wants to keep his dirty little secret hidden or face his past blowing up and devastating his perfect world.

CHAPTER 3

LAURA

Ihave never been this nervous in my life. It’s nine am on my first day as Troy Remington’s personal assistant, and I am already out of my league.

I spent the last hour being studied, judged, and severely found lacking as the personal shopper at Saks cast her critical eye over my choice of clothing and, with a disapproving shake of her head, thrust a business suit into my hands and instructed me to change into it if I valued my position at Remington Industries.

The fact I love this suit has irritated me because I wanted to throw some hostility back at her, but the delight I experienced when I stepped before her was unparalleled when her disapproval turned full circle and she smiled warmly.

Now I’m waiting nervously in reception for the human resources manager to come and meet me and I still don’t know how I managed to pull this one off.

“Laura.”

A smart woman heads out of the elevator, across the polished floor with her hand outstretched and a warm, welcoming smile on her face.

“I’m pleased to meet you. I’m Edie, the person in charge of staff welfare. Welcome to Remington Industries.”

The relief is almost overwhelming as I clutch her hand tightly and pump it furiously.

“I’m so happy to be here.” I gush, and she extricates her hand from mine and says with an amused smile.

“Follow me. I’ll walk you through security and arrange for your pass. There are a few forms to fill out, and then I’ll give you a tour of the building.”

The next houris a whirlwind as I go through the induction process of fingerprinting, photographs and signing more forms that I have seen in my life. Edie is kind and courteous, but there is a distinct wall of professionalism that she hides behind.

The other staff appear the same and it’s as if they are automatons running through the motions and I wonder if I will fit in here at all. It’s all too clinical, cold even, and nothing like the pet emporium I spent many happy months working in.

I am still pinching myself that I was awarded this opportunity and I’m even more mortified that my new boss overheard my childish conversation with my friends.

Now, as we begin our tour of the building, my heart is thumping because I know it will end up in the office of the man himself.

“Remington Industries prides itself on its modern practices regarding staff and business.” Edie says with an air of pride.

“There are strict procedures set in place to deal with any problems and the staff are rewarded well for their hard work. If you need anything, my door is always open, and I urge you to do your research on the company. It’s a fast-pacing environment and Mr. Remington is a demanding employer.”

I am almost running to keep up with her as she points out various offices and communal areas, and I’m struggling to absorb the information.

This place is huge, and I doubt I will ever find my way around. I am doomed because I’m already running to keep up in every sense of the word right now.

It’s only when we reach the final hurdle that I get a chance to catch my breath and say slightly shakily, “Any tips for remembering it all?”
