“So.” He shrugs. “Many do, little one. It’s my cross to bear.”

He flexes his muscles and winks, causing me to roll my eyes.

“So, is there an important lady in your life that got there first?”

I tease, and he shakes his head. “No. I care for nothing, just my brother and father. It’s easier that way.”

“Then I pity you.” I say as I glance around at the amazing interior of a billionaire’s paradise.

“I don’t care.” He shrugs as the plane’s engines roar, and we hurtle down the runway.

“I have no opinions of others and expect none in return.”

As we take off, I stare at the man who has been instrumental in all of this and am fond of him for some reason. I almost consider him a brother, the one I never had and when we level out, I say softly, “Wouldn’t you like to fall in love, Adonis? I figure you’d make a good boyfriend.”

“Why settle for one when there are so many on offer?” He says with a wicked grin and, as if to prove my point, the flight attendant returns, and he beckons her to his side and whispers something in her ear. She nods and then blushes as she hurries away, and Adonis unfastens his seatbelt.

“I’ll be right back. There will be another flight attendant along to serve you. Order me a whiskey, a double and whatever meal they have available. This shouldn’t take long.”

I watch him in bemusement as he follows the attendant to a curtain at the end that obviously leads through to a different part of the plane.

I’m not a fool and know better than to follow them and I sigh inside.

Well, that told me I suppose. He is just like all the rest of them. Thank God I met Troy. Once again, the anxiety hits me as I picture him with my unknown family. Anything may happen and I couldn’t sit back in the penthouse having fun with my friends, knowing he could be in danger.

Luckily, I have a guardian angel to grant me a wish, but something is telling me to be careful what I wish for.

I’m not even sure how I’ll handle this. I don’t know these people and just by reputation, they scare the shit out of me. I’m not sure what I can even do, but it’s something that needs to be addressed. They are my blood family, and my life has been a lie until now. Adonis told me something nobody had the guts to, and I have many questions ready for him when he returns.

Another flight attendant called Christos takes my order and I enjoy a glass of champagne with some seriously good canapes and make sure I order enough for Adonis along with his requested whiskey.

Christos also took my food order, and we will enjoy a platter of meat with salad and warm, crusty bread.

It must be an hour later when Adonis returns—alone and with a wicked smile on his face.

“Did you miss me?” he grins as he drops into his seat and reaches for the glass of whiskey.

“No.” I smirk. “Where is the attendant?”

“Recovering.” He sips his drink and shrugs. “It’s been a while and I have needs and so does she.”

“You used her.”

I reprimand him and he laughs softly. “We used each other. Chloe knows the score. We travel and fuck. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement that doesn’t interfere with her dates with other men.”

“That’s gross.” I am losing all respect for Chloe, and Adonis shakes his head. “Why is that gross? She’s single, not really dating anyone steady and neither am I. It’s just a bit of fun. Lighten up, Grandma.”

He kicks out at me, and I face him with a furious expression that turns to laughter almost immediately.

“Why can’t I stay mad at you?” I reply with a roll of my eyes. “One day, though, a woman will lasso your heart and you won’tknow what hit you. When that happens, give me a call. I’d love to meet her.”

“What about you, Laura? It appears that things have changed for you since we last met.”

“They have.” I shake my head and get back to business and say carefully, “Tell me why you’re involved in this. What’s in it for you?”

It’s a question I’ve been aching to ask, and he shrugs. “It’s business. My father is close friends with Don Vieri and when he heard about your new job, he was concerned. We were working on another project with his sons, and he asked for our help.”

“So, you were the messenger sent to take the sting out of the tail.”
