Now I’m nervous and wonder if I did the right thing in chasing after Troy.

The plane touches down in Sicily and my heart lands with a giant thump.

Adonis is watching me through hooded eyes and my breath is racing, much like this aircraft as it attempts to lose speed and I am having a severe anxiety attack as I grip the edge of the seat.

“Relax, little one. They are your family. You will be safe with them.”

“I only have your word on that, Adonis.” I smile ruefully. “Wasn’t the reason I was adopted because my own mother was a threat to me?”

He nods. “I take your point.”

I flash him a sad smile. “To be honest, none of this seems real. Ever since I walked into Remington Industries on that first day, nothing in my life makes any sense. It’s as if I’m living in a movie and I’m the hapless heroine. What happened to a normal life? I thought I had one.”

“Many do, and only the lucky ones get to live life as a wild adventure. Consider yourself one of them.”

“Don’t you mean unlucky?” I grimace. “Mafia belongs in the movies, Adonis and is something I would read about, not experience first-hand. Tell me, do they really use horses’ heads these days?”

Adonis chuckles softly. “More likely a human one. We hate cruelty to animals.”

It makes me laugh and I’m surprised when he reaches over and takes my hand in a sweet show of compassion. “You have a guardian angel, gorgeous. Not many are so lucky.”

His handsome face is staring at me with a softness that causes me to sigh. “I really hope you find a special lady, Adonis. You would make her life.”

He winks. “I’ll bear that in mind.”

As I settle back, I think about his brother and if he is anything like the man sitting in front of me, Melissa never stood a chance.

We are metby a black car that looks as menacing as its driver. He nods respectfully as we slide into the leather interior and doesn’t waste words on explanations.

“Do you always travel like this?” I ask Adonis, and he fastens his seatbelt and nods. “Mostly, which is why I prefer my motorbike. It gives me more freedom than traveling by car, and I enjoy the exhilaration it gives me.”

“That doesn’t surprise me.” I roll my eyes and he grins and my attention is distracted by the beautiful countryside we are powering through at speed.

The sun is shining, and it appears less busy here. Almost as if life slows down at a more restful pace. I wish someone would tell that my nerves though because they are racing faster thanthis car right now, and I tangle my fingers in my lap and practice what I’m going to say.

After a while, Adonis says with amusement, “Do you always talk to yourself?”

I guess he’s referring to the mutterings under my breath, and I nod. “I’m rehearsing the reasons why I’m here.”

He rolls his eyes. “Just say it how it is. Speak from the heart and remember, they oweyouan explanation, not the other way around.”

“I never thought of it like that.”

I take a moment to consider his words, and something fires up inside me. He’s right. They should be the ones who are worried, not me, and I nod slowly. “Yes, I’m guessing they’re pissing their pants.”

It makes us both laugh out loud because the idea of them being even remotely worried about my impending visit is rather comical given who they are.

It makes me feel better though, and I settle back and smile. “Thanks, Adonis.”

“You’re welcome gorgeous.”

I turn to him and say with interest. “What happens after this for you? Do you have another damsel in distress to rescue as you charge off on your steel horse into the sunset?”

“Nothing so dramatic.” He grins. “I’m heading back to Greece to visit my father. I’ve been away for a while and long for some home cooking and my own bed.”

“I didn’t have you down as the domestic type.” I grin and he shrugs. “We all need a home, little one. Wherever that is.”

Home. I had one once, but now I’m not so sure where that is. Is it with Troy, my adopted parents, or my new ones? I guess I’m about to find out.
