“What the fuck?” Her eyes are wide, and I pull her to one side and wrap my arms around her.

As the sun beats down on us relentlessly and the water laps against the bow of the boat, I stare deep into her eyes and whisper, “I told them I want to marry you, Laura and I wasn’t lying.”

“Marry me?” Her eyes widen and her face blushes a pretty shade of pink. However, it’s the sparkle in her eyes that makes my heart melt as she smiles happily. “Did you mean it?”

“Of course I meant it.” I grin. “I love you, which is why I am walking away alone.”

“I don’t understand.”

She is confused and I whisper, “They asked me to choose. To take my sister and swap her for you, or leave her to go back to you. I said I wanted you both.”

“Understandable.”

The happiness in her eyes is infectious and I physically ache to be alone with her right now.

“So, you left her because of me.” Her eyes glisten with building tears and I nod, experiencing rare emotion as I stare into her beautiful blue eyes.

“I won’t let you walk away from me, Laura. I love you and I never really expected that to happen.”

“I don’t believe either of us saw this coming, Troy.”

She presses her lips to mine and right at this moment, I have everything I want in my arms, but already know we have a long way to go before this is over.

I’m aware of something happening around us and pull back, noticing the guards are closing ranks and as I pull away, I note they have formed a wall between the boat and the house.

Adonis steps forward and says with a hint of an apology, “I’m sorry, Laura, it appears that Mrs. Vieri is waiting to speak with you.”

Laura gasps and peers past me and her eyes widen.

I turn and note the wall has parted and an elderly woman is standing there flanked by menace on all sides. The way she is staring at Laura causes a lump in my throat because it’s as if she’s seen a ghost and her eyes glimmer with tears.

“Laura.” Her voice is soft and yet I detect a hard line to it that probably goes with the territory.

Laura squeezes my hand hard and stares at her maternal grandmother in astonishment.

I whisper, “Go to her. You need to do this.”

Laura swallows hard and the panicked expression in her eyes is now mixed with curiosity.

I release her hand and nod toward the woman, waiting patiently.

“I’ll be right here. Remember, I’ve got you, and if I’m not up to the job, at least you have a guardian angel.”

Her lip trembles as she attempts to laugh, but I can tell she is shocked.

Then, as she moves from my side toward the waiting woman, I watch with rare emotion at the scene before me.

CHAPTER 51

LAURA

This is too much. Seeing Troy was emotional, but the woman observing me with tears in her eyes is so familiar it hurts. It’s as if I am looking at myself in the future and I’m fascinated by her.

I walk slowly, my eyes never leaving hers for a second and far from being afraid I’m merely curious.

She smiles as I approach, and I don’t miss the sadness in her expression as she wipes away a tear.

“Laura.” She whispers as I stand before her, not really knowing what I should do or say right now.
