“Adonis is a cold-blooded killer. He thinks nothing of ending a man’s life and making it painful. He has no compassion when he follows orders but I’m sure you will agree that underneath it all beats a good heart.”

“I can see that.” I agree, and my grandmother nods. “Understand our world before you judge it, Laura. We respect your decision, but you will always have a home with us.”

She waves toward the house behind her.

“In there are your cousins. Two men and a woman much like you. They have only ever known this life and yet each one of them has met someone who drags the good in them out. You did that for Mr. Remington who saw the error of his ways.”

“I love him.” I say simply and they share a look.

“Then that’s enough.” She says with a soft wink. “Love is the leveler of all emotions. It makes us do impossible things anddrives us to desperation sometimes. To find love is the greatest gift in life and if Troy is really the man for you, then we wish you well.”

“So, you will let Melissa leave with us.”

“No.” Don Vieri shakes his head.

“We will let Melissa leaveinsteadof you. Both you and Mr. Remington will remain here for one week.”

“But…” He holds up his hand.

“You have a family, and it’s important to understand what that means. I must be convinced on Troy Remington and it’s up to him to prove to me that he is genuine because you are and always have been one of the most important people in my life, wherever you grew up.”

He nods to the guard nearby.

“Arrange for Melissa Remington to leave with Adonis. Inform Mr. Remington that we require his presence for one week.”

The guard nods respectfully and leaves and I stare at my grandparents in awed shock. However, what surprises me the most is that I want to stay and learn exactly who I am and where I belong.

CHAPTER 53

TROY

The more I consider it, the more I conclude that I know shit. I definitely never thought this through when I hatched my plan to remove the Vieris from The Dark Lords. It may be a solid foundation for good, but it’s built on the bones of evil and surrounded by the ashes of tortured souls.

I am no match for them. They have played this game far too long and I accept that I will never be the best man for the job. I was a fool and as I sit on their magnificent boat and stare at men who couldn’t give a fuck how many billions I have, I feel very humbled indeed.

The guardian angel, as Laura calls him, is studying me with interest and unapologetic about it. He says nothing and just openly stares, and I shift a little as I wonder what’s running through his mind.

The stewards do a valiant job of keeping us supplied with refreshments and after a while he says in a deep husky voice, “Laura.”

I nod. “What about her?”

“Do you love her?”

“Yes.” I say simply and he leans forward, and I swear he blacks out the sun.

“Are you sure about that?”

His eyes are like serrated knives piercing my soul, and I shiver inside.

“I have never been surer of anything. It’s why I came here. To convince her family.”

“And not just to rescue your sister and use whatever bargaining tool you possess?”

I’m angry at his words and snap, “I will do anything for my family, and I also include Laura in that.”

I stare at him and say evenly, “I’ll admit I’ve made mistakes. My intentions toward Laura weren’t honorable and I saw an opportunity to get what I wanted and used her. It backfired on me because I fell in love with her, and my original aim no longer mattered.”

“You no longer wish to destroy her family?”
