"Not really. Just thinking about all the stuff I have to do tomorrow." I shrug nonchalantly but she isn’t buying it.

"You know, it’s not weird if you can’t stop thinking about him."

"And who says I’ve been thinking about him?" I take my eyes off the street beyond the window just long enough to glance at her. The cynical smile on her face makes it clear that she doesn’t believe me.

"Is that so? Tell me what you were thinking about just now." I avoid her eyes as nothing comes to my mind and I stutter trying to look for what to say. With a satisfied grin, she sits back and crosses her arms. "Go on and lie, I’m listening."

"Life," I blurt out and then I inwardly palm my face, when Ella bursts out laughing.

"Life. Does this life involve a certain man feasting on your coochie for hours at a time?" she asks, lowering her voice to keep the driver from being scandalized. I’m too surprised by her directness not to respond. I laugh in shock, unable to keep a straight face.

"You are psychotic, Ella."

"I’m not the one having wild sex with gorgeous men in bars, my dear," she says with a mischievous but approving glint in her eyes. I swear, it’s almost like she’s jealous she didn’t get the chance.

"But honestly, it’s not what you think," I say. Her taunting smile makes me realize she’s enjoying this too much. I have no choice but to give up.

I look out the window, gazing at the New York City skyline coming alive with a breathtaking display of lights and colors. The Empire State Building seems to pierce the night sky with its majestic presence, casting a warm glow that illuminates the surrounding area. It draws my eyes upward, leaving me awestruck.

I’ve only been to the Big Apple a few times, but it’s every bit as beautiful as Ella said it was. I wonder what it has in store for me.

"You can argue all you want, but I think you might like this guy."

Ella’s words cut through my thoughts and I look over at her. Her lips curve upward with a playful grin as she gazes straightahead. I simply roll my eyes then snap my fingers at her as though I’m getting her attention.

"Hello, he was a one-night stand, remember?"

"Fine, but…’

"There is no but, besides he’s an old man."

"Yeah, yeah." Ella rolls her eyes, her deep amusement shining in her eyes as she smirks at me. "An old man that gave you multiple orgasms. We should all be so lucky when we’re his age." She laughs and I nudge her with my elbow, but that only feeds her laughter.

Her phone rings and she picks it up. She grumbles something under her breath before answering, which can only mean one thing–her mom is calling. While she answers the phone, I return my gaze to the window, looking at the beautiful scenery New York City offers.

"I can't wait for you to meet my friends. They are gonna love you," Ella informs me brightly as she gets off the phone.

Ella has told me so much about them that I feel like I know them already. I might not be a fan of meeting new people–it takes time for me to get warmed up to strangers–but I think I'm ready to meet her friends.

"I can only hope so."

"They will, trust me. We’re gonna be so happy here together. You’re gonna love it! The second I told my dad about you, he agreed to give you a job in his office. He didn’t even ask what your degree was in!"

"Speaking of your dad, when’s he coming back?"

"He’ll be back tonight, I called him earlier."

"And your relationship with him, any improvement?"

She sighs and I give her hand a soft squeeze. She’s been battling for her father's love and acceptance for a while now and it hasn't been easy. Her dad hasn't exactly been the loving type, unlike my dad who thought I was his little princess. Still, she can hope that he’ll warm up to her someday.

"I know he cares for me, but..."

"He finds it hard to show it. Sounds a lot like my mom, to be honest. I don't know why you’re so adamant about staying here."

"Twenty years is a long time! I don’t want to just pack up and leave the second I’m an adult. I’m finally old enough for this city to be interesting!" she teases.

After dropping off my meager belongings in my new apartment, the car takes us to a beautiful restaurant. It beckons to us with a soft, warm glow as we step inside. The foyer welcomes us with a grand view of the cityscape, the glittering lights of hundreds of skyscrapers painting a breathtaking panorama against the night sky.
