“Tears tell truths,” Issy said softly.

“You have the patience of Mother Theresa. I wish Anwar did.”

“Have you told him how you feel?”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

Thundering finality drummed in Lucy’s chest. “He’s gone.”

“Gone?”

“He did a runner with his brother,” Lucy said as sadness gave way to anger. “If he cared about me, he wouldn’t have left me,” she thundered, fury rising as all her fears of abandonment resurfaced. “It’s so easy for him to make a run for freedom and leave me locked away in his wretched palace.”

“You think Anwar should’ve stayed?”

“Of course he should’ve stayed! We’re married.”

“Are you?I thought you didn’t want to marry him. Wasn't that what you told me.”

“Things are different.”

“Different?”

“That was then.”

“Then?”

“OK. It’s true. I didn't love him when I signed the marriage contract. Not like I love him now. I love Anwar with all my heart. There, you made me say it. Are you happy now?” The words escaped before Lucy could censor them. “I’m sorry. That was a classic projection. My shadow got ahead of me.”

Issy laughed. “You know you didn’t need a session with me, Lucy. You have mastered everything I taught you. You could be a therapist.”

“I just felt like talking to someone who really knows me. I don’t have anyone,” Lucy whispered.

“You have Anwar.”

“I used to have Anwar.”

“Open up to him. Tell him how you feel. Trust him with your heart.”

“I don’t know where he is. He's been gone for three days.”

“And if you did? Would you be willing to share what you have told me?”

"That I love him?"

“Yes. That you love him with all your heart.”

“Maybe,” Lucy said.

“Maybe?”

“Okay. Yes.”

Issy looked over her shoulder and pushed back from her chair.

“Lucy, can you hang on for a moment?”
