I almost stagger back, surprised by the anger in her voice. “What?”

She makes a lame shooing motion with her hand. “Begone, devil.”

“What the—”

“Why do you look better than ever while I’mthis?” She gestures to herself. “Can you explain that, Kira? Because going to the pub was all your idea, and now look at me.”

I plop down in the chair opposite, relieved she wasn’t being serious. “I puked this morning. All over my bed.”

Her eyes brighten slightly. “You did? Yeah, me, too. But not on my bed. I made it to the toilet.”

“Did your… Was there a…” I trail off, not sure how to describe what I saw. “Never mind.”

Carrie leans towards me, her eyes narrowing. “Why do you look different? It’s so weird. It’s like you’re Kira, but the glow-up version.”

“My spot finally disappeared.Aftermy birthday party. I guess the universe likes to play jokes on me.”

“No, it’s more than that,” she says, squinting. “Are you wearing contacts?”

“Nope.”

She frowns. “Did you dye your hair? It looks redder than usual. It suits you.”

I hold up my hands. “I swear, I didn’t. It’s been a weird morning. I think I threw up blood this morning.” Her jaw drops. Reaching over, I pat her arm. “I’m okay though. I hope you had a good time last night, though. I know my party was… Well, it was mostly just us, but at least Eddie and a few others joined eventually.”

Eddie is Carrie’s crush. Personally, I find him a little grating. The guy starts most sentences with “actually...”

“I think I said something embarrassing to Eddie, but I can’t remember what it was,” Carrie says. “Maybe I told him Iliked him. Oh God. Oh no, no, no.” Her hand flies up to her mouth. “What if I told him I’ve been in love with him since, like, year seven?”

I wave a dismissive hand. “So what? We’re adults now. We can drink, and we can vote, and we can admit our feelings to the people we like. It’s all good.”

“Not when you’ve been pounding vodka and Cokes,” she says. “God knows what foolishness I came out with last night.”

“Look. I’m going to get you a coffee from the machine. We’re going to top up your eyeliner, then we’re going to English Lit, and all of this will be fine.”

She grabs my hand. “Do you promise?”

I nod. “Absolutely.”

We both stand, and I go to wrap an arm over Carrie’s shoulder, but it feels weird. I pull my arm away and approach her again, trying to figure out why. Then I realize.

“What the fuck?” I blurt out.

Carrie shakes her head. “What are you…?”

I press my shoulder against hers. It’s higher than Carrie’s by about two centimetres.

“Oh my God,” she breathes.

“It isn’t possible. I’ve always been five-two. Always. No matter how hard I try to grow.”

“And I’ve always been five-five.” She lifts her weight onto her toes. “Are you wearing lifts?”

I gesture to my ballet flats. “Um, no.”

“Then you’ve grown about four inches overnight.Overnight, Kira. How is this happening? What the ever-living fuck is going on?”

Good question.
