“When I want my steak barbecued, I’ll know where to go.” I wink.

Cooper jabs a thumb at the tallest of the bunch. “Nathan, the coolest of the cool and best water wielder in the castle.”

“I have to be so I can put out your fires,” Nathan quips. “Nice to meet you, Kira.” He smiles broadly. A few skinny locs fall across the bridge of his nose.

“Nice to meet you too.”

Cooper looks at me. “People are saying you were first to the crime scene… I mean, room.” He raises his eyebrows.

“Crime scene is about right. There was so much blood.” I shake my head. “She must be seriously hurt, unless auras heal quicker.”

“We do,” Nathan says. “But not so quickly we can run around with an arterial wound. Whatever happened to her, it wasn’t good.”

“And Dina had her throat cut, right?” I ask.

Cooper and the others exchange glances. “Well, there was certainly a wound on her throat.”

“Like a stab wound?”

Roman lifts an eyebrow. “Something like that.”

“Two wounds,” Evan says. His head lowers so his eyes fall into shadow.

I remember he’s a werewolf. I have no idea what that means as an aura, only what movies used to depict before auras began mixing with humans. “Two? What does that mean? Is it something special?” From the way they look at me, I feel like it is. And my scalp prickles as I put the clues together. “Vampire?”

Cooper slowly shakes his head. “All the vampires are dead. It has to be someone imitating a vampire somehow. But we don’t know why. The Black Orchid Society has been meeting to discuss it, but we’ve been getting nowhere.”

“What’s the Black Orchid Society?” I ask.

Evan flashes a wide grin at Cooper. “A clique of total losers.”

“Don’t listen to him,” Cooper says. “It’s a group for possible future circle leaders. Those with royal blood.”

“And you’re in it?” I ask.

“Me too,” Nathan says.

Roman nods. “And me.”

“Oh, okay,” I say. “And you do some amateur sleuthing on the side?”

Cooper laughs. “Yeah, I guess we do, lately. Seeing as someone is attacking us, it seems pretty pertinent.”

“You know, you could take your place on the society too,” Nathan says to me.

Cooper elbows him in the side.

My eyebrows shoot up to the ceiling. “What?”

Evan cocks his head. “Ah, she doesn’t know.”

“No, I think I do, actually,” I say. “My family is royal. Or… maybe used to be.”

Cooper bites his bottom lip. It’s insanely hot, and Isuddenly blush.Whoa, nelly. It’s too soon for a crush, and there’s way too much going on right now.

“It’s a little more complicated than that,” he says. “But don’t worry. You’ll learn it all in time.”
