“Hey! I won’t, I guess. I’ll try not to.”

“You’ll be fine,” he says. “Finn is a bit of a dick. We all know it.”

I watch in horror as Apollo turns towards us, his gaze narrowing. “I think he heard.”

“Good,” Cooper says.

The whistle blows to signal us moving to the next partner, and I watch Cooper and Apollo stare each other down.

“Wow,” I mumble. There’s some real tension between Apollo and Cooper. I can’t help but wonder what that’s all about.

I don’t like him,Cyrus says.

Apollo Finn? Me neither.

No.The boy who looks at you like you are food to be eaten.

Cooper? Nah, he doesn’t do that.

There’s a low growl in the back of my mind.

Does Cooper look at me like that? Now I’m beginning to wonder.

Twenty-Two

“I’m notin your next class.” Laila jabs a finger at the timetable and then downs the last of her Coke. “You’ll have to get there yourself, but it’s, like, second floor, fifth room.”

Nerves immediately prickle in my stomach. Even though Laila isn’t the friendliest roomie in the world, I’ve come to rely on her in class.

“Literature,” I muse. “Well, I guess I have one class that’s normal.”

“Yeah, but you haven’t done the reading.”

I groan. “What is it?”

“The Great Gatsby.”

“Oh.” Definitely normal. “I thought it would be something supernatural.”

Laila lifts an eyebrow. “Didn’t you know? There’s two versions. In this one, Gatsby uses his warlock powers to conjure riches. It’s a cautionary tale about using your magic for personal gain.”

I narrow my eyes. “Are you serious?” Laila is so deadpan, I can’ttell.

“Yes.”

The bell rings, indicating first break is over, and all students filter out of the recreation room. I follow the crowd, trudging up the stairs with my timetable clutched between sweaty fingers.

Cyrus is either no longer in my head or staying very quiet. Part of me misses him being there, helping me remember to keep my elbows up at training, though I’m not sure he could help me with a book that was written after he died.

It’s such a strange thought. Vampires, werewolves, and everything else aura or demon has never been part of my world. Humanity knows these things exist, but they’re more than happy to let the auras deal with it all.

Now Iaman aura, whether I like it or not, and Ihaveto deal with it.

If only I could run away without my organs cooking inside my body.

The classroom is almost full by the time I reach it. For once, the teacher is short. Literally everyone else in this school is tall, so it’s a nice change. I wonder if she’s human. She reminds me of a teacher I had back in Manchester. Her hair is cut short, just above her jawline, and she wears glasses all the way down on the tip of her nose.

There’s no one I recognise in this room, so I pick a random desk and sit, missing Carrie.
