My body thrums. As I hurry down the passageway, I’m already thinking about his fangs in my neck. The ivory of his teeth against my skin.

Cyrus groans in my mind.

I pick up the pace, almost running despite the heavy books in my arms.

Come to me, he whispers.

Somewhere deep down inside, I know this isn’t normal. This connection between us is otherworldly, strange, and maybe a little bit toxic. But I don’t care. I want to be near him, to feel his strong body against mine.

I want you too, Kira Belvedere.

The seal is up ahead. This time, I’m ready to avoid the large spike. And there he is, waiting for me in the doorway, his arms stiff with tension by his sides. His eyes burning with intense heat.

I throw the books aside and launch myself into his arms.

“Kira,” he murmurs.

I look up at him, and I suddenly realise I don’t know what I want. Being close to him is all my body craves, but nowthat I’m here, I don’t know if I want him to bite me, kiss me, or hold me.

We don’t do any of those things, though. We simply stare at each other, drinking each other in.

“I enjoyed living in your world today, Kira,” Cyrus says. “I like the way your mind works. I like the way you move. I like how open your heart is.”

“It is?”

He places a palm against my chest. “Yes.”

“I… I brought the books.”

“Do you want to read them now?”

I shake my head. “I think I want to do something else first.”

Cyrus comes closer, his eyes fixed on my neck. “You want to keep our connection alive?”

“I want you to make me feel that way again.”

He nods. “First, I think we need to choose somewhere that isn’t as visible.” He lifts my arm and pushes up my sleeve. His finger trails the length of my forearm all the way to my elbow. “Is here okay?”

Licking my lips, I nod.

Twenty-Four

Cyrus burieshis mouth against my arm, and when he tenderly breaks the flesh with his teeth, a rush of pleasure races through my body. After endless moments, we stagger back together, and he catches me before I swoon to the ground.

He lifts his face to mine, a smear of my blood along his bottom lip. “Did I take too much?” He brushes a lock of hair from my forehead.

“Don’t stop,” I whisper.

He drinks again, and I groan, arching my back against the rush of heat.

Then he withdraws, growling deeply. “Kira, you taste sogood.”

He pulls me closer, and I lean against his chest again. Then he lifts my arm and runs his tongue along the wound. It’s like the cherry on top of a delicious cake.

I stretch out all of my limbs to make the sensation run through the rest of my body. “Why does it feel so good?”

“I suppose it’s evolutionary,” he says. “If the prey of the vampire enjoys its attack, then it won’t fight back.”
