“How did he kill her?” I have to ask.

She frowns. “I’m not sure. He didn’t say that part. Maybe he didn’t want to get into the gory details. But she’s definitely dead, because there’s going to be a funeral for her. Students aren’t allowed to go on account of the fact she turned into a serial killer at the end there, but I think the faculty are going.”

“So, she definitely killed Dina and Jenny? Was it just coincidence that their rooms were near us?”

“I guess our rooms are at the back end of the castle, and there’s an easier escape route.” Laila shrugs.

“And Gabrielle?”

“Her parents are threatening to sue the council for allowing Octavia to run the school.”

I laugh without humour. “Normally, I’d find that snotty. But if the council knew empaths can turn evil, letting Octavia keep her position here for decades was probably a big mistake.”

“She had everyone fooled,” Laila says. “She was always so calm. I can barely believe it.”

I notice for the first time that the events of the last few days have taken a toll on my friend. Her frown is even deeper than usual, and there are shadows beneath her eyes. Octavia was the person we’d run to when we needed help. She had provided safety, or at least we’d thought she had.

“So now you’re awake, have you decided what you’re going to do about Cyrus?” Laila asks.

I pull my thoughts away from Octavia and look back at my friend. “Who’s Cyrus?”

Laila’s mouth makes anOshape, but before she can speak, the door opens, and Apollo walks in.

“Belvedere,” he says in his usual haughty voice. “How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” I reply shortly.

I know I should thank Apollo for saving my life, but there’s still something that bugs me about him. Gran used to tell me to trust my instincts about people. And, yeah, they were a little off with Octavia. But my instincts scream at me that this man is not to be trusted. Maybe that’s because my jaw still aches from where he punched me.

“I brought you both coffees.” He passes us two large mugs.

“This looks like good coffee,” Laila says, sounding surprised.

I stare down at mine. There are chocolate sprinkles on top. The pattern goes in a swirl, and I can’t seem to pull my eyes away. But I eventually do.

Laila takes a couple of sips. “Itisgood coffee.” Laila flashes us both a rare smile.

“Well, as long as you girls are okay, I’ll leave you to it.” He smiles and lifts a palm as a goodbye.

As soon as the door swings closed behind him, I set my coffee down on the table. “That was weird.”

Laila licks foam from her lips. “He’s the acting head now. I guess he just wanted to check up on you.”

“But the coffees?” I lift aneyebrow.

She shrugs. “I’m not complaining. I need the caffeine.”

I lean back against my pillows. “Anyway, what were you talking about?”

Laila opens her mouth to speak then snaps her jaw shut. She frowns, and a thin line appears on her brow.

Eventually, she shakes her head. “I have no idea.”
