She smiled up at him, her eyes heavy.
“Worth waiting for?”
He’d been waiting his whole life for her, but he only nodded.
“Without a doubt.” He brushed a gentle thumb over her swollen lips. “I want you to sleep with me tonight. In my bed.”

“What if Tommy wakes up and sees that I’m gone?”
“What would he do?”
“Either go back to sleep or come looking for me, just like he did earlier.”

“You have a point.” She reached up and touched his cheek. “I want to stay with you, but I’ll have to leave before it gets light.”

He reluctantly pulled free, then reached for her pretty gown before picking her up and carrying her to his bed. Her eyes were already half closed when he gently wiped a cleansing cloth over the swollen pink folds. “Sleep,” he said when she stirred. “You need your rest.”
