I dropped my voice. “It’s been a week since my injury. You know what that means.”

I only received a casual shrug in response, but I saw the way his fingers tightened around his fork.

“Upstairs, Nathanael.Now.”

Mathias gave me a slow, teasing smirk as he leisurely uncurled from his chair and sauntered up the staircase behind the bar.

I’d like to say I had sufficient self-restraint and composure to wait until we reached our rented room before trying to strip his clothes from him.

But that would have been a lie.

Chapter Five

Ren was tucked up against my shoulder, his dark hair splayed across my chest featherlight and slightly ticklish. When I ran my fingers down his arm he shifted in his sleep, curling his knee around mine and locking our legs together. I smiled at the effortless affection.

“Buenos días,” he murmured after a moment, sleepiness making his accent thicker. He cracked an eye and glanced at the pale outline of the window before groaning and twisting around in the creaky bed to face me.

“In what world are you awake before me?” Ren rasped and I chuckled, landing kisses on whatever parts of him I could reach with my mouth. He may have normally been a horribly cheerful morning person – the type I most despised, so it was no wonder we’d once been enemies – but our fun the night before had clearly exhausted him, considering he’d been doing most of the work while I ended up with my face shoved into the pillow.

The prince sighed and rolled gracefully out of bed, squinting into the pre-dawn grey haze beyond the scratched and mildewed inn window. Stretching and regretting the loss of him in my arms already, I pushed back the blankets to follow him, but he immediately spun around on his heel with a wicked grin carved across his face.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“To get dressed. Wash up. You.” I gestured around the room.

“Let’s skip to that last one, shall we?” he purred, stalking closer and looking every inch the predator.

It seemed he was no longer tired.

I got to my feet and shivered in the chill of the room, wishing we could indulge but knowing it wasn’t sensible. “We should get going.”

“It’s still raining,” he told me, as if he had actually seen anything through the window other than grime and dust. “We’ll only make the innkeeper and the rest of the Vallalavega suspicious if we set off in that rather than waiting for the weather to clear and the sun to actually, you know, rise.”

“Then we should talk about where we’re going.”

Ren cocked his head, considering me. “There’s really only one place.”

I frowned. “There is?”

“Sí.Back to bed.”

I gave a put-upon sigh even as I revelled in the playfulness in his voice. “Or maybe we should find something to eat?” I teased.

His abrupt laughter startled me. “Oh, I intend to, Mathias. But seeing as you got to lie there last night and enjoy what I gave you, I think it’s only fair that I put you to task now. Kneel.”

His eyes were bright and his gaze adoring, and fuck, I loved being looked at like that.

“Down on your knees, Nat, or I will force you to them and you willlike it.”

Although I’d been about to obligingly drop to the floor, I caught the edge in the prince’s tone and realised what he wanted.

So instead I stood my ground, grinned, and drawled lazily, “will I?”

He struck like a snake. I grunted as my bare knees hit the rough floorboards harder than expected, but I had no time to protest before he’d gathered a fistful of my hair and pressed my face into his groin. I breathed in the scent of him, of his natural musk mixed with the cheap soap we’d bathed with after our exertions last night, and felt his cock stir against my lips.

Ren ignored my efforts to push him away, knowing they weren’t sincere, and cradled my head in his hands. “Look at you,” he murmured, his voice thick with lust. “You can tap out if you need.”
