Cole: Thank you for letting Dean give me your number.

My heart seemed to beat louder in my chest. Out of all the things he could have texted me, he started with a thank you.

Summer: It was long overdue.

Cole: I know I don’t have any right to ask you anything right now, but I’m going to anyway.

Summer: ...

Cole: If you need anything, anything at all before I come by tomorrow night, will you tell me?

His question soothed my omega instincts and I both loved and hated it at the same time. But I wasn’t the same girl who’d fallen head over heels in love with him. I wasn’t a damsel in distress that needed someone to swoop in and save her.

Summer: Truthfully? I’m not at the point where I would ask that of you. But I will let you know that I have everything I need right now.

He didn’t text back for a few minutes and I was beginning to think I may not hear back from him until tomorrow night.

Cole: That’s fair. Thank you for being honest and for letting me know either way. I think that’s going to be the only path forward with this.

Cole was right, the only way we were going to sort out this mess was to be honest with each other. And for now, we just had to take it one day at a time.

Miles was so intent on his work he didn't even hear me enter the office. It was impeccably clean in here, like usual. He never quite let the grease and grime of the garage follow us in. We'd even taken to removing our shoes before entering.

His brow was furrowed and I could tell it wasn't his work that was getting to him.

Not wanting to startle the beta, I knocked on the door loudly. He jumped regardless, and I chuckled as I walked over and dropped into the chair next to his desk.

"Want to talk about it?"

His face scrunched up in confusion as he turned to me, blinking a few times to clear his vision after staring at spreadsheets for too long.

"What? My work?"

"No," I said with a chuckle. "Whatever is bothering you."

"It's nothing," he started but with one raised eyebrow from me, he caved. "Fine. I’m just worried about Cole and what this all means for the rest of us. What if he wants to step away from the pack?"

It was something I hadn't even considered but I could see how his brain went to that point.

"Cole has always held himself back to a degree," I reminded him. "It took us two years before he even agreed to be pack. Maybe this is why."

"It's always been why," he agreed as he leaned back in his chair, crystal blue eyes staring up at the ceiling. I hadn't realized the revelations yesterday had hit him so hard.

"It could change now. Maybe he'll rely on us more because someone... no, two someones, will be depending on him," I pointed out. “Maybe this is the final barrier he needs to break through.”

Miles let out a little hum of acknowledgment as he thought it over, rocking in his chair slightly.

"That depends on how he takes these deep conversations they have coming. He's been a man that hates getting too close," he pointed out.

"Well, all we can do is stand behind him, offer whatever support he asks for or needs, and see how it plays out," I said.

He blew out a breath and gave me an exasperated look.

"That's what I was afraid you'd say," he groaned.
