She talked up all the people who needed attention, checked on the staff, and played the doting wife to a man she despised. Now it was time for some much needed alone time.

She’d just sunk into the soothing warm water when the door of her bedroom opened. Then footsteps over the carpet until Johnny appeared in the doorway of her bathroom.

He stared at her for a few long seconds. “You are fuckin’ gorgeous.”

Cheryl kept her expression blank. A subtle mix of boredom and defiance.

Johnny licked his lower lip. “There wasn’t a guy in the place who couldn’t keep their eyes off you.” He huffed out a laugh. “Even saw a few adjusting their dick after you walked away. As usual you left every guy with a hard on.”

“Just doing what comes naturally.” Cheryl grinned without humor.

“Always a wiseass with a smart mouth.” Johnny stepped further over the white tile floor, the recessed lighting picking up a glint in his beady eyes.

“Just callin’ it like I see it.”

“Maybe tonight we could change things up a bit.” He flashed a smarmy smirk he probably thought was sexy.

“As in?” It had been awhile since Johnny came on to her. He had his side pieces to satisfy him which was fine with Cheryl as long as he was discreet, but tonight he’d sampled just enough bourbon to make him believe his own ego.

“As in, you get outta the tub, and ride my dick.”

“Always the sweet talker.” She dramatically rolled her eyes hoping the sarcastic gesture would send him to his room—alone.

“All right, how about you get outta the tub and sprawl yourself across my bed so I can lick your pussy, then fuck you so hard you’ll feel me for a week.”

Cheryl pursed her lips as in thought. “No and no.”

“Bitch!” Johnny narrowed his eyes. “I am your husband, ya know.”

“Yes, I was there when we signed the papers. I was also there when my father told you to get your act together, keep your ass out of jail, launder his money through the jazz clubs, and marry his daughter. I was part of the deal to make you look better, and at the time I needed my father’s help, but that’s where this deal starts and ends.” She returned his smirk. “Or did you forget that part of the bargain?”

“Coldhearted bitch, just like your old man.” He glared at her for a long minute.

“Just practical,” Cheryl countered.

“Fuck you.” Johnny turned on his heel and stormed out of the bathroom.

“Not tonight, or any other night,” she called after him on a laugh.

She heaved out a sigh and sunk deeper into the calming water. Maybe she should’ve been more afraid of Johnny. After all, he did unspeakable things at her father’s request. Or maybe he was right, she had just enough of her father in her to be immune to danger. A terrifying thought.

Nick already worked his way through a half pack of Marlboros when Samson came through the office door. He turned away from the two-way window overlooking the club. “Good crowd for a Tuesday night.”

“Decent. I don’t make any judgements until I see the numbers at the end of the night.”

Nick joined Samson in the sitting area, then glanced at his watch as he stubbed out his smoke in the cut glass ashtray. “Cobra say what time he was stopping by?”

“Should be here any minute.” Samson narrowed his eyes. “I’m hoping you’re gonna participate in this meeting.”

“What’re you talking about?”

“Ever since the party on Sunday night you’ve been acting a little off.”

“I’m fine.” Nick brushed him off.

“If you got something to say just spit it out cause I want you all in when Cobra gets here.”
