A nod.

I’ll help with every step of his plan.

The bastard who took Casper from me, even for a moment, deserves so much pain.

“He was there today.” Those words hit me in the gut, harder than anything else Remy could have said. “When we were standing around my mom’s yard waiting on Emmett and Sori to surprise her. He was there, pretending he was happy we were home. And he killed Cassie.”

My heart starts racing, blood pounding in my head as I realize what I’ve done. By not telling him, or anyone else, I’ve put Casper in danger.

“We need to go.” Sweat dots my forehead, and an ache in my chest is making it hard to breathe. “I have a bad feeling.”

He looks at me curiously. “She’s been home for like six weeks. If he was going to try something, he’d have done it before now.”

“You were gone,” I point out. “He had plenty of time, but today, anything he would have been planning would have been ruined. If Emmett and Sori are here, too, he’ll know I’m coming for her.”

His eyes widen as he makes the same connection I have, and Remy pulls out onto the road again with the squeal of burning rubber as our only companion.

“Call Emmett,” Remy orders when we are up to speed.

I already have my phone out, dialing. “I don’t want her to be alone. Not with everything that happened today. Just in case.”

I am waiting for my cousin to answer. “What happened today? Is she okay?”

He shoots me a look before turning back to the road. “Nothing major. I’m sure Casper will tell you if she wants you to know about it.”

Emmett’s phone goes to voicemail, so I try Sori next. Her phone immediately turns over, and I am drawing a blank on what to do next.

“Linc,” Remy snaps. “Call Linc. He lives like five minutes from her place.”

Why we are yelling at each other, I don’t know. We’d gone through war, explosions, and had survived without panicking. I’ve never felt this much chaos flowing through my veins in my entire life.

“What’s up, man?” Linc asks briskly. “You ever gonna get your head out of your ass and claim your baby mama, or what?”

“What?” I stutter and my mind completely blanks on what I was supposed to be asking him. “What are you talking about?” He is utterly silent on the other end of the call and I snap out of the haze his admission reveals. “Can you go to Casper’s house until Remy and I get there?”

I hear keys jingle immediately. “On my way. What’s wrong?”

I shoot a glance at Remy, silently asking if I should tell him about Joel, and he nods.

“Joel’s the one who caused Cassie’s accident, and I have a bad feeling about Casper. Remy said he was there today when you guys got home.” I put my phone on speaker so Remy can hear the conversation.

A door slams in the background, and Linc curses. “Yeah, he was.” His truck roars to life. “I’m on my way. How far out are you?”

“I’ll be there in less than ten.” Remy pushes down on the accelerator as we go. “Hope none of the old men try to pull me over.”

Linc snorts on the other end. “I doubt anyone in Birch Harbor is going to care that you’re speeding.”

I stop paying attention to their conversation. Instead, I let my mind stray to Casper and to what Linc insinuated.

“She’s pregnant?” The words are nothing more than a whisper, but both Linc and Remy go silent. “Casper. She’s pregnant?”

“What the fuck, Linc?” Remy slaps the steering wheel, belatedly realizing that another bomb had been dropped into my life. “That’s not our news to share.”

“Hey,” Linc defends himself through the speakerphone. “How the hell was I supposed to know that Emmett or Sori didn’t call and tell him?”

I slice my hand through the air at Remy when he opens his mouth to say something else. “Wait. Does everyone know about this but me?”

Remy bites his lip. “She threw up today at the welcome home party, and Kennedy made a joke about it. Then Sori had a test. So Casper took it. Then word spread after Emma was eavesdropping through the wall. There wasn’t any stopping it, man. We tried. But word spreads fast in a small town. I’m sure Mom is on the phone with her friends as I speak, telling everyone that she’s gonna be called Grammy soon.”
