A knock on the door interrupts our conversation.

“Hey, Casper,” Wrenly Smith, a girl I went to high school with, says from the doorway.

She is dressed in an adorable pair of scrubs that have baby koalas and sloths on them.

“Thanks, girl. I got them on Etsy.”

Oh, I said that out loud.

“That, too.” Cole laughs. “Those pain meds must really be working.”

“Yep,” I coo. “Are you here to do the ultrasound?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Wrenly wheels in the large machine and closes the door behind her. “I figured you’d rather have a familiar face. Especially after everything that’s happened.”

“Thank you,” I whisper as I try not to cry again. I am very emotional.

She gets down to business. Cole watches every move she makes, making sure that she doesn’t hurt me. When she lubes up the wand and moves to my waist, he stops her by putting his hand on her arm.

“What are you gonna do with that?”

“It’s an ultrasound wand, Cole.” I grab his hand and pull him back. “She has to put that where the sun don’t shine so she can make sure our baby is okay.”

His eyes shoot down to mine. “You’re still pregnant? The gunshot didn’t take that from us?”

Us. He said us.

“That’s what we’re checking,” Wrenly offers. “Her bloodwork is showing that she’s still pregnant, but we need to check everything downstairs.”

Cole immediately sits back, grabs on to my hands, and motions her forward with a nod. “Hurry up then. We need to know.”

There’s hope in his voice.

While Wrenly puts the wand inside me, Cole has his eyes locked on mine.

“I saw Cassie,” I tell him. “She told me we have to name the baby after her.”

“Done,” he answers. “I saw her too, though. Here. Waiting with us. For you.”

I smile, even though I am extremely uncomfortable at the intrusion in my pelvis.

“You searching for gold down there?” I wince when she hits a particularly tender spot.

“Sorry, Casp.” Wrenly starts clicking on the machine in front of her. “I have to get the goods, though.”

“Marry me,” Cole says suddenly. “I have the ring. Right here. I love you, and I was coming for you before the baby. Before all of it. You have been it for me since the moment I met you, and I’ve counted every single minute since you walked away. You’ll be it forever.”

“Yes.”

I don’t waste time. Don’t ask if he’s sure. Don’t question it at all. Until he drops the ring and has to dive under the hospital bed to find it. Meanwhile Wrenly is smiling, I am sobbing, and Cole is cursing.

“Got it.” He holds it up triumphantly.

“If you don’t put that ring on my finger, Cole Morgan, I’m going to stab you in the eye with a rusty spork.”

That’s how, with an ultrasound wand stuck inside me, a gunshot wound in my abdomen, and Cole smiling down at me with tears in his eyes, I get engaged.

“Congratulations,” Wrenly says a few moments later as we kiss. “It looks like you’re still pregnant and having twins. But Dr. Masterson is going to have to confirm. I just know you won’t want to wait.”
