“Yes, family stuff. What are you doing here?” Bella asked, taking in his maturing features. She hadn’t seen him for two years.

Still handsome, but he looked different.

She glanced down at his well-tailored suit and shiny shoes. Not that he’d dressed poorly when they were in college, but Cain was definitely doing well for himself here in New York.

“I have a meeting,” he said, diverting his eyes. “How long are you in the city?”

“Just one night,” Bella said.

Cain nodded. “Listen Bella, can I—”

“Hey,” Blake interrupted, walking up beside them.

Shit.

Bellahad completely forgotten about him and her lawyers behind her.

“Blake Dufort,” he said, extending his hand.

“Cain Hillford.”

Blake shot her a look.

“This is Blake,” Bella said, then realized they’d already done that. But introducing him as the man she was marrying felt wrong. Despite the fact everyone knew.

But this was the man she had wanted to marry. Who had broken her heart. Who she thought was going to be standing with her upstairs and supporting her as she claimed her business.

Not someone who was doing this for financial gain. She didn’t judge Blake at all, but finding herself standing with the two men was seriously awkward.

Cain’s gaze drifted back to hers after acknowledging her legal team to stay back a few steps. “Do you have time for a drink tonight? This afternoon?”

She blinked.

He’d left her life so abruptly two years ago, leaving her with a broken heart. Now here he was in front of her, in New York, asking to talk. Offering, potentially, an explanation for why he’d just left.

She glanced at his left hand and it was bare.

He’d said he had left her for someone else, but it appeared he wasn’t married.

“Yes. I’m staying at the Dufort Hotel. There’s a bar next door. London Club. How does five o’clock sound?” she suggested.

Cain smiled, nodding, then placed a hand on her arm, and leaned in to kiss her cheek. “Perfect. I’ll see you at five.”

With a glance at Blake and the men behind her once more, he walked around them and headed to the elevators. Bella wondered what type of business he did with Kennedy Enterprises.

“What the fuck was that?” Blake growled.

When she glanced up there was wild, dark fire in his eyes.

“Uh...my ex?”
