CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Bella sat listeningto her lawyers as she played with her food. One of them was on the phone with a judge hammering out options. The other speaking to a courier who was collecting what they thought was the illegally adjusted trust document to send it to an expert examiner.

While she replayed the image of Blake walking away from her over and over.

Was it her imagination or was he jealous?

If you love him and want him, then I cannot marry you.

Or was this him using Cain as an excuse to back out of the arrangement? It didn’t seem like something he would do, but the only other thing she could think of was he had feelings for her.

She always knew Blake was a possessive man. That had never been in question.

But to give up this opportunity to save InkWell because she might still love her ex-boyfriend seemed very dramatic. For Blake.

She’d already spent hours on the phone calling board members of Kennedy after Bill had convinced her it was worth finding out how they truly feel.

Randall had said they didn’t want her there.

Her team didn’t believe it was quite that black and white.

“It’s likely Scott’s been running the company like a dictatorship and they’re too scared to speak or have an opinion that doesn’t match his,” Bill expressed. “For years.”

God. How horrible.

“Which is a good reason to consider selling your shares and just walking away,” Matthew, her other lawyer, added. “You don’t have to put yourself through this. Even if we get you back in the door and in one of those board seats—which we will—it won’t be fun.”

“I know,” she muttered, wishing Blake was here to give his her his thoughts.

Before I say something I will regret, I need to walk away.

So she’d made the calls and by the tenth call, Bill had rubbed his jaw. “They’re all scared.”

“As expected,” Matthew agreed.

“But what can I do?” Bella asked. “I can’t force them to admit my father has committed forgery.”

“Keep going. One of them will break. And we’ll call again tomorrow. Then the next day,” Bill explained.

“I’m flying home tomorrow,” Bella said.

“It might pay to stay a few extra days. What if one of them wants to meet with you?”

“Are you staying?” she asked, feeling vulnerable without Blake at her side. Perhaps she would call Ward or her brothers.

“Yes. I’m filing an injunction to stop Kennedy from doing anything from the date of your twenty-fifth birthday,” Bill clarified.

Which was in ten days.

“Plus, we’ll have the results from the handwriting experts,” Matthew tacked on.

“Okay. I’ll stay a few more days.”
